Josh Hawley fleeing the complex as members of Congress were evacuated from the chambers. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEarlier that afternoon before the joint session started, he walked across the east front of the Capitol,\u201d said Rep. Elaine Luria, D-Va., who played the clip after airing an image of the senator cheering demonstrators hours before the riot. \u201cAs you can see in this photo, he raised his fist in solidarity with the protesters.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-embed-handler wp-block-embed-embed-handler wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"jamLUTZPK4pNtesyEgxBfkM3WbVOw8Azh7Duno6vcFJ0rGi925IXRY\"><\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Luria proceeded to show Hawley running out of the Capitol as peaceful protests turned into violent trespassing and shut down congressional proceedings. The committee played the clip twice, once in real time, and then in slow motion to drive home the point, as if an active 42-year-old jogging down a hallway or a flight of steps was a rare sight (the average age in the Senate is <a href=\"https:\/\/guides.loc.gov\/117th-congress-book-list#:~:text=The%20average%20age%20of%20Members,Democrats%20holding%20the%20House%20majority.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">64<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The committee sought to smear Hawley as a coward who was complicit in the violence by raising his fist to the same crowd that would later obstruct the joint session of Congress. The image of the senator\u2019s fist, however, which Hawley <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HawleyMO\/status\/1550464912836763649?s=20&#038;t=oaQ_NR2R3QqAMUDq1YQlsg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">promoted<\/a> on a campaign mug Friday morning, was captured hours before rioters would breach the first barriers of the Capitol. There is no proof Hawley knew protesters were preparing to riot, or that the senator\u2019s single raised hand incited the turmoil. By the Jan. 6 Committee\u2019s standards, however, objections to certification of the electoral votes are synonymous with incitement \u2014 never mind that Democrats tried to halt the process in 2001, 2005, and 2017. Meanwhile, it wasn\u2019t just Hawley who was forced to leave the Capitol. Every lawmaker was either evacuated or forced to hunker down. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"jQP\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I&#8217;m no Hawley fan, this is complete bs. He never gave a &#8220;supportive fist pump to rioters.&#8221; He gave a fist pump to protestors. Initially established in pursuit of a third impeachment of President Donald Trump, the probe has widened its targets as the former Republican president is no longer the only conceivable contender to be the nominee in 2024. The committee weaponized to persecute political opponents ahead of the upcoming elections has now taken the opportunity to pivot its smears toward other potential White House rivals, Hawley included. <\/p>\n<p>In what was supposed to be the final hearing, Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney opened the summer finale with the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/07\/22\/democrats-announce-season-2-of-jan-6-saga-after-this-weeks-finale-ended-with-a-dud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announcement<\/a> of season two coming in September. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have far more evidence to share with the American people and more to gather,\u201d said Cheney.<\/p>\n<p>The committee placing a target on Hawley also showcases how little panel members appointed to investigate the Capitol security failures actually care about those Capitol security failures. What does a spotlight on a single Republican senator evacuating with his colleagues have to do with the fact that <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/09\/5-questions-that-must-answered-before-the-j6-committee-begins-its-theatrical-production\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Capitol Police<\/a> were half-staffed, under-trained, ill-equipped, and unprepared to fend off a horde of demonstrators storming barricades? Out of eight hearings theatrically produced for national television by a former ABC News executive, the committee devoted a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/07\/13\/jan-6-committee-avoids-probing-security-failures-as-hearing-finally-covers-capitol-riot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fraction<\/a> of its time to legitimate oversight of the lapses in Capitol security. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/12\/16\/nancy-pelosi-owns-january-6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">repeated<\/a> refusal to dispatch the National Guard in the run-up to the riot offers far more probative value to a legitimate investigation than a clip of Sen.
