Yet eight House Republicans did. One, South Carolina\u2019s Nancy Mace <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepNancyMace\/status\/1550151240415416322?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1550151240415416322%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fabcnews4.com%2Fnews%2Flocal%2Fnancy-mace-wears-message-on-back-amid-house-vote-protect-contraception-access-women-health-healthcare-abortion-politics-republican-south-carolina-washington-wciv\">wore a jacket<\/a> to the vote that featured the words, \u201cMy state is banning exceptions. Protect contraception.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd just this week, I think it was yesterday or the day before, the state of South Carolina is working on passing legislation that would ban those exceptions,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/mace-wears-jacket-supporting-contraception-190003187.html\">explained<\/a>. \u201cSo if you\u2019re gonna have a state that bans abortion for women who are victims of rape and incest, you have to and should protect access to contraception. I can\u2019t imagine a world where you wouldn\u2019t otherwise, especially for those women that have been through that kind of trauma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mace\u2019s claim is either a sophistic non sequitur or completely bonkers. Is Mace really arguing that rapists don\u2019t have enough access to condoms? Contraception is widely available in South Carolina, as it is everywhere else in the country. Just <em>this year<\/em>, Mace\u2019s state passed the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scstatehouse.gov\/sess124_2021-2022\/bills\/628.htm\">Pharmacy Access Act<\/a>,\u201d a law that allows patients to obtain birth control without a doctor\u2019s prescription (Washington Republicans proposed a similar bill a few years back that was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2019\/06\/11\/i-am-a-conservative-i-agree-with-aoc-on-over-the-counter-birth-control-column\/1402941001\/\">shot down<\/a> by Democrats) with \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.live5news.com\/2022\/07\/12\/south-carolinians-can-soon-access-birth-control-without-doctors-prescription\/\">strong bipartisan support<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Even if the Supreme Court decided tomorrow that contraception wasn\u2019t under the purview of the Constitution, as they did abortion, the laws of South Carolina \u2014 as with the laws everywhere else \u2014 would remain in place. The chances of anyone snatching away your condoms or birth control pills is on par with the chances of you being murdered over \u201cnet neutrality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Again, the Right to Contraception Act is not merely about protecting the right of a person to obtain contraception but forcing others to provide it for them. In the bill\u2019s findings, we learn one of its purposes is to undercut conscience exemptions for birth control \u2014 which under the Democrats\u2019 definition includes abortion drugs and sterilization:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p>Providers\u2019 refusals to offer contraceptives and information related to contraception based on their own personal beliefs impede patients from obtaining their preferred method, with laws in 12 States as of the date of introduction of this Act specifically.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Too bad. No American should ever be compelled by the state, or anyone else, to deliver a product that undermines their faith (and this atheist doesn\u2019t believe <em>anyone<\/em> should have to pay for your birth control.) Indeed, the 1993 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/103rd-congress\/house-bill\/1308\">Religious Freedom Restoration Act<\/a> codified the non-imaginary constitutional right of religious freedom for people who function under federal laws and regulations. In Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, the Supreme Court found that the Obamacare contraception mandate, the one used to persecute nuns, violated the rights of privately held, for-profit organizations.<\/p>\n<p>The Democrats\u2019 new bill undermines both. It also defines contraception as \u201cany device or medication used to prevent pregnancy, whether specifically used to prevent pregnancy or for other health needs,\u201d which, as John McCormack <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2022\/07\/democrats-contraception-bill-overrides-religious-freedom-law-and-protects-abortion\/\">notes<\/a>, includes abortifacients drugs such as mifepristone, which have both \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12032390\/\">contraceptive and non-contraceptive uses<\/a>,\u201d and are used to end the lives of the unborn in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. If that is the kind of birth control Mace is talking about, she should say so.<\/p>\n<p>This bill also funnels more money into Planned Parenthood\u2019s industrial-scale abortion business and prohibits states from voting to cut off taxpayer subsidies. And as Cathy McMorris Rodgers <a href=\"https:\/\/republicans-energycommerce.house.gov\/news\/leader-rodgers-rules-remarks-on-the-payouts-for-planned-parenthood-act\/\">points out<\/a>, under the new law, Planned Parenthood can use taxpayer dollars \u201cto sterilize a 13-year-old without her parents\u2019 knowledge.\u201d The text of the bill does not define the age of \u201ca person.\u201d And anyone who follows this issue knows well that it\u2019s no oversight.<\/p>\n<p>No one is coming to take your contraception. But someone is definitely coming for conscience rights. And they\u2019re doing it with the help of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/the-8-republicans-vote-to-protect-federal-right-to-contraception-2022-7\">eight Republicans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">\n  David Harsanyi is a senior editor at The Federalist.
