Now that Russia is embroiled in war and facing sanctions from multiple nations, it has tightened its supply to the European Union. As a result, Europeans are struggling with an energy crisis that is forcing millions to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d0c5815f-f0a2-49ad-8772-f4b0fbbd2c94\">dim their lights<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/germany-gas-crisis-landlords-lowering-the-heating-shortages-russia-ukraine-2022-7\">ration hot water<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>One Washington Post article soberly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/07\/11\/ukraine-canada-nord-stream-1-gazprom-russia\/\">announced<\/a>, \u201cEurope braces for gas \u2018nightmare\u2019 as pipeline from Russia shuts off,\u201d after news that the Nord Stream 1 pipeline carrying natural gas was scheduled to undergo days of maintenance that would halt an already slowing flow of energy to Germany.<\/p>\n<p>Even after the pipeline restarted, the government was forced to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/07\/22\/germany-agrees-15-billion-euro-bailout-for-gas-giant-uniper-as-russia-squeezes-supplies.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">devote 15 billion euros to bail out Uniper<\/a>, a German energy company, which has received only \u201ca fraction of its contracted gas volumes\u201d from Russia since the beginning of Vladimir Putin\u2019s war with Ukraine. <\/p>\n<p>Former President Donald Trump predicted this energy power struggle in September 2018 in his speech at the U.N. General Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGermany will become totally dependent on Russian energy if it does not immediately change course. Here in the Western Hemisphere, we are committed to maintaining our independence from the encroachment of expansionist foreign powers,\u201d Trump boasted. <\/p>\n<p>Trump made similar remarks during a NATO summit earlier that same year. \u201cGermany, as far as I\u2019m concerned, is captive to Russia because it\u2019s getting so much of its energy from Russia,\u201d Trump told NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. \u201cWe have to talk about the billions and billions of dollars that\u2019s being paid to the country we\u2019re supposed to be protecting you against.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><\/figure>\n<p>Despite the truth in his words, the corporate media wrote off Trump\u2019s warning as a knee-jerk reaction and aversion to green energy. \u201cFact-checkers\u201d at CNBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/07\/13\/trump-is-exaggerating-germanys-reliance-on-russia-for-energy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a>, \u201cTrump is exaggerating Germany\u2019s reliance on Russia for energy.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<span class=\"hUw95m38WHQZX14lCo7IPAFYbkiVnvNJSDqrGtMj0dBs6cKpx\"><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Four years ago, Trump perfectly predicted what would happen in Europe. <\/p>\n<p>Foreign leaders laughed at him and fact-checkers called his claims \u201cnot accurate.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kt5DF0gDD9\">pic.twitter.com\/kt5DF0gDD9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Cabot Phillips (@cabot_phillips) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cabot_phillips\/status\/1538889891974725633?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 20, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Shortly after Trump\u2019s U.N. remarks, the Washington Post published an article headlined, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2018\/09\/25\/trump-accused-germany-becoming-totally-dependent-russian-energy-un-germans-just-smirked\/\">\u201cTrump accused Germany of becoming \u2018totally dependent\u2019 on Russian energy at the U.N. The Germans just smirked.\u201d<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>The article detailed how Trump \u201clashed out at Germany over its gas imports from Russia\u201d but noted that \u201cTrump\u2019s attacks\u201d had no sway on the German government. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter his July remarks, Merkel responded that she may be in a better position to judge her country\u2019s dependence than the current U.S. president,\u201d WaPo reported. <\/p>\n<p>Ever since then-German Chancellor Angela Merkel forced her nation to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/correction-germany-nuclear-shutdown-story-82051054\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">close down<\/a>\u00a0all its nuclear power plants after the 2011 Fukushima disaster in Japan, Germany has not only  <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/21\/germanys-green-energy-disaster-is-a-warning-to-the-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201ccreated the highest global electricity prices per household in the world,\u201d<\/a> as noted by Federalist Senior Editor David Harsanyi, but it has also significantly increased its dependence on Russia for energy. This energy flow from Russia is especially needful when the<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/02\/07\/how-green-energy-fantasies-have-put-the-world-at-the-brink-of-war\/#popup-maker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> nation\u2019s other green power initiatives such as solar and wind fail<\/a> to meet demand. <\/p>\n<p>Now Germany, Austria, Italy, and the Netherlands are looking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2022\/06\/22\/coal-plant-europe-germany-austria-netherlands-russia-gas\/\">\u201cto resurrect old coal plants\u201d<\/a> to remedy what has become a problem that could stretch into the <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/STATEMENT_22_4630\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">imminent cold winter<\/a>.
