One year earlier, Amazon bought PillPack, an online pharmacy company, which paid the U.S. Department of Justice nearly $6 million in penalties this year for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2022\/05\/03\/amazon-pillpack-6m-settle-doj-fraud-suit\">fraudulently overbilling<\/a> on insulin prescriptions.<\/p>\n<p>Amazon maintained a 56.7% market share in the e-commerce sector as of 2021, according to data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/retail\/2022\/amazons-share-of-us-ecommerce-sales-hits-all-time-high-of-56-7-in-2021\/\">PYMTS<\/a>. The merger with One Medical comes as lawmakers scrutinize Amazon and other firms for alleged antitrust violations.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, the Senate Judiciary Committee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/as-senate-weighs-antitrust-bills-apples-ceo-called-ted-cruz-with-significant-concerns\">considered<\/a> bipartisan proposals such as the Open App Markets Act and the American Innovation and Choice Online Act \u2014 both of which are meant to curb technology companies\u2019 ability to prefer their own services on platforms that they created.<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of Amazon\u2019s announcement, Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.klobuchar.senate.gov\/public\/index.cfm\/news-releases?ID=54F73C9C-F713-44A9-B33E-07E61F551DF2\">urged<\/a> Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan to \u201cthoroughly investigate\u201d the deal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmazon has a history of engaging in business practices that raise serious anticompetitive concerns,\u201d the letter said, \u201cincluding forcing small businesses on its site to buy its logistics services as a condition of preferred platform placement, using small businesses\u2019 non-public data to compete against them, and, as was recently disclosed in new documents from the House Judiciary Committee\u2019s Big Tech investigation, potential restricting advertising by competitors who could offer lower prices and better service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers have also scrutinized Amazon smart doorbell company Ring for providing user data to police. In response to a letter from Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) inquiring about the products\u2019 privacy features, Ring \u2014 which Amazon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/why-amazon-acquired-ring-2018-3\">acquired<\/a> in 2018 for $1 billion \u2014 revealed that it had given law enforcement videos from user devices in emergency situations 11 times since the beginning of the year after making a \u201cgood-faith determination that there was an imminent danger of death or serious physical injury\u201d to someone needing information on short notice.<\/p>\n<p>Markey argued that the revelation justifies the passage of his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/senate-bill\/2052?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22Facial+Recognition+and+Biometric+Technology+Moratorium+Act+of+2021%22%5D%7D&#038;s=2&#038;r=1\">Facial Recognition and Biometric Technology Moratorium Act<\/a> \u2014 legislation that would bar state and federal entities from accessing Americans\u2019 biometric data.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Amazon announced Thursday that it will acquire subscription health care company One Medical for $3.9 billion.
