No such benefit has been announced by the Social Security Administration (SSA).<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Facebook video, viewed over 27,000 times, proclaims that it is the \u201clast day to register\u201d for people born before 1957 to potentially receive a $1,728 increase in their social security checks. \u201cPeople Born Before 1957 Are Getting $1,728 Added To Their SS Checks If They Register Below,\u201d the post\u2019s caption claims. The video shows a group of people excitedly reacting to something on a computer screen.<\/p>\n<p>Those who are 62 years or older and have paid into Social Security throughout their lives are eligible to receive Social Security checks, according to the Social Security Administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/ssi\/text-entitle-ussi.htm#:~:text=You%20can%20receive%20Social%20Security,do%20not%20need%20work%20credits.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>. The average monthly benefit for retired workers was $1,666.49 in April 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/select\/heres-how-much-the-average-social-security-check-is\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNBC<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The viral Facebook post appears to be a scam. There is no mention of the alleged news benefit in any of the SSA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/news\/press\/releases\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">press releases<\/a> or on its \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/oact\/cola\/Benefits.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">benefit amounts<\/a>\u201d page. There are likewise no <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=people+born+before+1957+geting+their+social+security+checks+%241,728&#038;source=lnms&#038;tbm=nws&#038;sa=X&#038;ved=2ahUKEwiMhYCarIj5AhUTj4kEHQQ3AkAQ_AUoAXoECAEQAw&#038;biw=1440&#038;bih=821&#038;dpr=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">credible news reports<\/a> suggesting the federal government would be seeking to increase the payments on social security checks. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2020\/08\/25\/fact-check-joe-biden-kamala-harris-defund-social-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Did Joe Biden Say He And Kamala Harris Will Defund Social Security?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Social Security benefits did see an increase of 5.9 percent in 2022 due to a cost-of-living adjustment caused by inflation, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/10\/17\/people-will-get-bigger-social-security-checks-in-2022-how-to-prepare.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNBC<\/a>. A non-partisan analyst group, The Senior Citizens League, did suggest monthly benefits would rise approximately 10.5 percent in 2023, or around $175.10 per month, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/07\/21\/your-social-security-check-could-jump-175-next-year-is-that-enough-.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">outlet<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about the viral post, the SSA directed Check Your Fact to a section of its website <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ssa.gov\/use-these-scam-tools-to-spot-fraud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dedicated<\/a> to spotting scams.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time Social Security has been the target of misinformation.
