Wicker is currently enrolled in both Arizona State University and Oakwood University, where is she earning two separate undergraduate biology degrees. Despite her academic success, Wicker insists that she is just like any other teenager.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still a normal 13-year-old,\u201d Alena <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/lifestyle\/2022\/07\/20\/alena-analeigh-wicker-college-stem\/?utm_medium=social&#038;utm_source=twitter&#038;utm_campaign=wp_main\">told<\/a> The Washington Post. \u201cI just have extremely good time management skills and I\u2019m very disciplined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wicker\u2019s adoptive mother explained to The Post that she began noticing that Wicker was different from other children at a very young age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlena was gifted,\u201d Wicker\u2019s mother, Daphne McQuarter, said. \u201cIt was just how she did things and how advanced she was. She was reading chapter books\u201d at three years old, McQuarter added.<\/p>\n<p>To that extent, the teenager told The Post, \u201cWhat is age?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not too young to do anything,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel like I have proven to myself that I can do anything that I put my heart and mind to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wicker was pulled from a traditional school after being bullied by a classmate for her achievements. She was homeschooled for a few years, but in fifth grade she returned back to the classroom before the pandemic hit.<\/p>\n<p>During the COVID-19 pandemic, her school switched to virtual learning and Wicker decided to take on additional courses far above her grade level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was bored,\u201d she told The Post. \u201cThe high school work was so easy for me that I ended up graduating from high school at 12 years old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wicker said she initially thought she wanted to be an engineer, but took one college class and knew it was not for her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasted no time. I dropped a class, changed my major, and when I took my first biological class, I knew in that moment that this is what I\u2019m supposed to be doing,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA big part of what I want to do is viral immunology, and I want to advocate for underrepresented communities that lack health care,\u201d Wicker added. \u201cIt\u2019s something that I\u2019ve become passionate about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wicker, who is black, founded Brown STEM Girl \u2014 an organization dedicated toward helping female minorities get involved in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.<\/p>\n<p>Wicker\u2019s advice for any young girl is, \u201cNever give up on you, never let someone tell you that you can\u2019t do something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 13-year-old knows that completing college by 2024 and enrolling in medical school will be a difficult task, but says she knows that she has a \u201chuge support system around me that pushes me and cheers me on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love school, I love learning, I love reading,\u201d she also told The Post.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An adopted 13-year-old prodigy has been accepted into medical school after completing high school at age 12.
