The following two and a half hours, however, illustrated why lawmakers might feel their work is unfinished: The finale failed to be the summer showstopper it was made out to be.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday\u2019s prime-time extravaganza featured another pair of former White House aides who defected from the Republican president in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 riot. Former Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Matthews and former National Security Adviser Matthew Pottinger testified as the committee walked play by play through the White House, combing through the president\u2019s conduct to corroborate their former colleague, Cassidy Hutchinson. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will be no question over her veracity,\u201d Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/live-news\/january-6-hearings-july-21\/h_91d70d10d562ac0c7829e0c3a344aa3e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> CNN of Hutchinson\u2019s prior appearance ahead of Thursday\u2019s hearing. <\/p>\n<p>The two new witnesses\u2019 corroboration, however, did nothing more than offer more evidence highlighting former President Donald Trump\u2019s desire to march with his supporters to the Capitol, a desire the president expressed openly in his Jan. 6 speech.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to walk down to the Capitol, and we\u2019re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women,\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/02\/10\/966396848\/read-trumps-jan-6-speech-a-key-part-of-impeachment-trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> of lawmakers supporting his election challenges. \u201cI know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yet the committee has framed Trump\u2019s ambition to travel down Pennsylvania Avenue as a grand revelation worthy of indictment with witness after witness testifying to something the president expressed openly. <\/p>\n<p>At no point in the more than two-and-a-half-hour hearing, however, did lawmakers or their witnesses put forward any evidence to corroborate Hutchinson\u2019s most sinister claim, which has been <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/30\/if-the-jan-6-committee-is-into-investigating-unbelievable-stories-it-should-probe-trumps-gorilla-channel-next\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">left unsubstantiated<\/a>: that Trump violently assaulted a Secret Service agent to hijack the presidential limousine so he could drive himself to the Capitol. Nor did witnesses patch other holes in Hutchinson\u2019s testimony, such as her <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/07\/01\/exclusive-jim-banks-demands-white-house-surveillance-logs-to-vet-contested-j6-testimony\/\">story<\/a> that White House Counsel Pat Cipollone told her on the morning of Jan. 6, \u201cPlease make sure we don\u2019t go up to the Capitol,\u201d and \u201cWe\u2019re going to get charged with every crime imaginable,\u201d which doesn\u2019t square with multiple other sources who have said Cipollone was absent from the White House that morning.<\/p>\n<p>Even if the president had gone to the Capitol, the trip would not have been out of character. Trump is known to cheer his supporters at every opportunity. When well wishers in 2020 stood outside Walter Reed Medical Center hoping for a speedy recovery from Covid, Trump jumped into a motorcade for a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ABCPolitics\/status\/1312882218797355014?s=20&#038;t=ijdF7E3NnAKLEw9sTaVHrw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drive-by<\/a> appearance.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the overarching image the committee presented on Thursday, of a president failing to govern as the Capitol suffered under siege, undermined the broader narrative they\u2019ve promoted for weeks of an active \u201cinsurrectionist\u201d engaged in an open coup. <\/p>\n<p>The panel\u2019s season finale focused on \u201c187 minutes\u201d wherein Trump allegedly remained apathetic to the turmoil interrupting a joint session of Congress. But not only is the \u201c187 minutes\u201d figure a contradictory message to the story of Trump viciously demanding to go to the Capitol immediately, it\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/12\/16\/j6-committee-fabricates-more-evidence-says-trump-waited-187-minutes-to-call-for-peace-it-was-actually-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">made-up timeline<\/a> conceived by Cheney in December when she ignored the president\u2019s tweets urging demonstrators to remain peaceful and go home. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/01\/12\/us\/capitol-mob-timeline.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According<\/a>\u00a0to a Jan. 6 timeline by the New York Times, the first barriers of the Capitol building were breached at 2:13 p.m. The Washington Post\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/nation\/interactive\/2021\/capitol-insurrection-visual-timeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">timestamps<\/a>\u00a0the first break-in at 2:15 p.m. The president\u2019s first tweet addressing the rioters was published at 2:38 p.m., meaning Trump pled for peace after just 23 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlease support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement,\u201d Trump wrote. \u201cThey are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>About 30 minutes later, Trump addressed the demonstrators again on the same platform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am asking for everyone at the U.S. Capitol to remain peaceful. No violence!\u201d the president wrote. \u201cRemember, WE are the Party of Law &#038; Order \u2014 respect the Law and our great men and women in Blue. Thank you!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At 4:17 p.m., or two hours after the first barriers of the building were breached, the president tweeted out a video demanding rioters leave the Capitol \u2014 a video Twitter\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/v2-9mdnszte.thefederalist.com\/2021\/01\/06\/twitter-locks-trumps-account-threatens-to-ban-him-for-calling-for-peace-following-capitol-riot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">promptly removed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the committee got the headlines it was looking for, with media <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/07\/19\/ap-spreads-disinformation-by-adopting-j6-committees-fabricated-timeline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blindly adopting<\/a> the \u201c187 minutes\u201d across their front pages. CNN aired the chyron, \u201cNOW: Jan. 6 Cmte Details 187 Minutes of Trump Inaction\u201d for much of the hearing\u2019s first half. <\/p>\n<p>While the panel aired Trump\u2019s speech urging rioters to go home, members glossed over the president\u2019s posts that demanded protests remain peaceful. <\/p>\n<p>Operating without any minority-appointed opposition, whom House Speaker Nancy Pelosi <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/07\/21\/nancy-pelosi-kicks-ranking-republicans-jim-jordan-jim-banks-off-partisan-jan-6-commission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">barred<\/a>, lawmakers on the select committee will continue in September ahead of the fall midterms with show-trial proceedings <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/10\/the-j6-inquisition-is-an-obvious-soviet-style-show-trial\/\">reminiscent<\/a> of the Soviet-era show trials. While the committee will also likely hold new hearings later this year to give itself more time to find the smoking gun \u2014 plus a <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/05\/18\/media-moves-to-profit-off-of-ridiculous-j6-commission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">book deal<\/a> \u2014 the September timeline happens to coincide with elections. Democrats on the probe <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/03\/19\/democrats-admit-jan-6-committee-is-all-about-midterms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">conceded<\/a> in March that the investigation was all about the midterms as vulnerable members fret about losing voters who are worried about crime, high inflation, and unsustainable energy prices. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir challenge: Making the public care deeply \u2014 and read hundreds of pages more \u2014 about an event that happened more than a year ago, and that many Americans feel they already understand,\u201d the Washington Post said. <\/p>\n<p>It seems eight hearings produced with the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/06\/07\/former-abc-news-president-producing-primetime-j6-show-trial-hearings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">help<\/a> of a former ABC News executive failed to do the trick.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Tristan Justice is the western correspondent for The Federalist.
