Biden was fully vaccinated and twice-boosted when he tested positive for COVID (Screenshot)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>President Joe Biden tested positive for COVID-19 and has begun taking Paxlovid, a newly-authorized treatment for patients who are at high-risk from the virus (such as the elderly), the White House announced on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The White House noted the treatment in a general <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/07\/21\/statement-from-press-secretary-karine-jean-pierre\/\">press statement<\/a> reporting the president\u2019s COVID-19 test results:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis morning, President Biden tested positive for COVID-19.\u00a0 He is fully vaccinated and twice boosted and experiencing very mild symptoms.\u00a0 He has begun taking Paxlovid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paxlovid, which is taken in pill form, was fully FDA-authorized for prescription earlier this month, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-authorizes-pharmacists-prescribe-paxlovid-certain-limitations\">July 6 update<\/a>, titled \u201cCoronavirus (COVID-19) Update: FDA Authorizes Pharmacists to Prescribe Paxlovid with Certain Limitations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Studies have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11036239\/What-Paxlovid-COVID-medication-prescribed-Biden-specifically-high-risk-people.html\">reportedly shown<\/a> Paxlovid decreases risk of death and hospitalization for unvaccinated people with COVID <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yalemedicine.org\/news\/13-things-to-know-paxlovid-covid-19\">by 89%<\/a>, but is less effective for those, like Biden, who are vaccinated and become infected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPaxlovid must be taken within five days after symptoms begin,\u201d the FDA notes. The five-day regimen requires patients to take two types of medications: an enzyme inhibitor and a medication to boost the body\u2019s ability to fight off viruses.<\/p>\n<p>Yale Medicine reports that, while the drug tends to be well-tolerated, typical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yalemedicine.org\/news\/13-things-to-know-paxlovid-covid-19\">side-effects of Paxlovid<\/a> include:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">hives<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">trouble swallowing or breathing<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">swelling of the mouth, lips, or face<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">throat tightness<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">hoarseness<\/li>\n<li class=\"MsoNormal\">skin rash<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pres.
