But if you are a betting person, you might feel like hedging on this one. Could the United States alone repel an attack on its critical, chip-manufacturing partner? Would the so-called \u201cinternational community\u201d feel as strongly? Do our politicians have the will to arrest any such behavior, or are they too busy faking be arrested, themselves?<\/p>\n<p><span>And where the <\/span><em>hell<\/em><span> are the hawks, who squawked like headless chickens over the invasion of Crimea, but now act like <\/span><em>heartless<\/em><span> chickens over China? There\u2019s an awful lot of avian analogies in here. Maybe it\u2019s the bird-brained geopolitical responses\u00a0of our ruling classes that has me fixated. Or maybe I want some duck bao buns. Probably both.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For several years my colleague Natalie Winters and I have attempted to explain <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenationalpulse.com\/?s=Chinese+communist+party\" rel=\"\">the reach of the Chinese Communist Party in the Western world<\/a><span>. Having infiltrated and corrupted high schools, colleges and universities, high-ranking military personnel, leading politicians, and of course the international corporate media, it suddenly seems very obvious why our elites \u2013 who usually clamour for war \u2013\u00a0are suc<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/UMFPH6OCkQs\" rel=\"\">h \u201csupine, protoplasmic, invertebrate jellies<\/a><span>\u201d when it comes to China. That line, by the way, was a tribute to the outgoing Boris Johnson, in case you missed it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After Vietnam and Iraq and Somalia and Kosovo and Iraq again and Afghanistan and Ukraine\u2026 when we FINALLY ACTUALLY NEED the neoconservative chickenhawks, they\u2019re nowhere to be found.<\/p>\n<p class=\"button-wrapper\" data-attrs=\"{\" url><a class=\"button primary\" href=\"https:\/\/raheemkassam.substack.com\/p\/the-hawks-are-awfully-sheepish-on?utm_source=substack&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_content=share&#038;action=share\" rel=\"\"><span>Share<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span>There is no Great Wall-to-wall coverage of how China is moving on one of its neighbours \u2013\u00a0a critical U.S. partner \u2013\u00a0perhaps <\/span><em>because<\/em><span> this time there might <\/span><em>actually<\/em><span> <\/span><em>be<\/em><span> U.S. national interest at stake here. And you can\u2019t possibly make government policy based on what would help your own people. That would be racist or somethin\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Instead, we will likely be treated to some perfunctory hand-wringing over China\u2019s entirely foreseeable \u201csurprise\u201d attack on a sovereign nation. Then, like clockwork, Jake Tapper will pivot to blaming Vladimir Putin, and maybe air a segment on how Viktor Orban is also a dictator and might invade, uh, Sweden?<\/p>\n<div class=\"subscription-widget-wrap\">\n<div class=\"subscription-widget show-subscribe\">\n<div class=\"preamble\">\n<p>Keep on reading, but let me get your e-mail address to keep you informed on this:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>The wider point is not how this collective sheepishness (is that tautological?) is risible or ridicule-worthy. It\u2019s how there is very clearly no plan for the likeliest of scenarios: that Western supply chains from both Taiwan <\/span><em>and<\/em><span> China itself could dry up overnight. Think scarcity and inflation is bad now? Imagine the scenario played out by the Center for a New American Security (CNAS), which to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/qYfvm-JLhPQ\" rel=\"\">credit of Chuck Todd (I know!) was covered in detail on MSNBC.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the CNAS simulation, China invades Taiwan in 2027. Frankly, assuming we have that much time is wildly optimistic. They moved on U.S. forces in Guam, Japan, and Australia in an attempt to limit the U.S. ability to fight back. It goes as you might expect\u00a0\u2013\u00a0the U.S. further commits resources, ratchets up the fight, and eventually China detonates a High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) device above the Pacific Ocean as a means of warding off America.<\/p>\n<p><span>But it was <\/span><strong>how the war began<\/strong><span> that caught my attention: the Chinese sabotage of Taiwanese advanced chip manufacturing facilities that would send a major shock through Western economies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>As even the <\/span><em>New York Times<\/em><span> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/26\/us\/politics\/computer-chip-shortage-taiwan.html\" rel=\"\">noted<\/a><span> in January: \u201cTaiwan accounts for half of the overall production of microchips that are critical to the functioning of mobile phones, consumer electronics, cars, military equipment and more. South Korea, the nearest competitor, has about 17 percent of the overall market. But Taiwanese chips are the smallest and fastest, and its foundries account for 92 percent of the most advanced designs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Beijing Joe himself recently conceded: \u201cNinety percent of the most advanced chips are made in Taiwan. China is doing everything it can to take over the global market so they can try to outcompete the rest of us and have a lot of applications \u2014 including military applications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>SAIS professor Hal Brands <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2022-06-23\/economic-chaos-of-a-taiwan-war-would-go-well-past-semiconductors\" rel=\"\">wrote<\/a><span> for Bloomberg: \u201cAccording to a RAND Corporation study, a war lasting one year would slash America\u2019s gross domestic product by a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/content\/dam\/rand\/pubs\/research_reports\/RR1100\/RR1140\/RAND_RR1140.pdf\" rel=\"\">painful<\/a><span> 5% to 10%. But it would gut China\u2019s gross domestic product by an excruciating 25% to 35%. And lest Americans console themselves that China would get the worst of it, the entire world would suffer as the war ripped apart critical technological supply chains.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But that RAND Corporation study is now six years old \u2013\u00a0an eternity in modern politics,\u00a0 war-fighting, and even economics. To underscore that point, when it was published, Barack Obama was President. If that feels like several centuries ago, that\u2019s because it was, in a geopolitical sense. One might also wish to review RAND Corporation articles such as \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/blog\/2020\/12\/taiwan-may-be-more-at-ease-with-the-biden-administration.html\" rel=\"\">Why Taiwan Can Feel at Ease with Joe Biden as U.S. President,<\/a><span>\u201d by Defense Analyst Derek Grossman as a means by which to take their words with a pinch of MSG. Taiwan feels at ease with this President <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/07\/20\/president-joe-biden-job-approval-rating-hits-new-low-in-public-poll.html\" rel=\"\">as most Americans do<\/a><span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"captioned-button-wrap\" data-attrs=\"{\" url>\n<div class=\"preamble\">\n<p class=\"cta-caption\">Please remember to share this. The economic impact on them, I mean.<\/p>\n<p><span>Western corporations \u2013\u00a0the media especially \u2013\u00a0have become as reliant on Chinese largesse as many an African dictator. Whether <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/asia_pacific\/china-is-waging-an-aggressive-propaganda-campaign-to-distort-media-landscape-report-warns\/2020\/01\/15\/30fd4d58-374a-11ea-a1ff-c48c1d59a4a1_story.html\" rel=\"\">advertisements for the state-run <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/asia_pacific\/china-is-waging-an-aggressive-propaganda-campaign-to-distort-media-landscape-report-warns\/2020\/01\/15\/30fd4d58-374a-11ea-a1ff-c48c1d59a4a1_story.html\" rel=\"\">China Daily<\/a><\/em><span>, joint \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thenationalpulse.com\/2020\/07\/31\/establishment-media-collaborators\/\" rel=\"\">Marxist journalism schools<\/a><span>,\u201d or the very bottom line of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk\/news\/how-china-uses-news-media-weapon-its-propaganda-war-against-west\" rel=\"\">business function<\/a><span>, the Chinese Communist Party\u2019s ability to pull at the marionette strings of corporate media is surpassed possibly only by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/defender\/pfizer-vaccination-ads-news-sponsorships-research\/\" rel=\"\">Pfizer<\/a><span>. No U.S. politician or political party enjoys the same kid glove treatment the media affords the CCP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmerica First\u201d advocates will also necessarily be skeptical of a prolonged U.S. involvement \u2013\u00a0especially if it means the death of U.S. servicemen and the potential use of nukes, per CNAS\u00a0\u2013\u00a0for the sake of an island the size of the state of Maryland.<\/p>\n<p><span>Which is why it is imperative America (at least) reckons with its deficiencies on this in a significant way. Yesterday, the U.S. Senate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/07\/20\/chips-act-vote-senate-advances-semiconductor-bill.html\" rel=\"\">passed a bill allocating around $52bn aimed at onshoring chip manufacturing<\/a><span>. But this is piddling compared to the $250bn suggested last year. That bill couldn\u2019t pass the House because Democrats sought to water down the language on China, and use it as an excuse to force through climate change policies and subsidies. Republicans rightly opposed the hijacking of this serious subject, which cost another year and hundreds of billions of dollars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Oh well, at least Nancy Pelosi\u2019s stock portfolio increased again. She magically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/nancy-pelosis-husband-buys-millions-worth-of-nvidia-stock-ahead-of-chip-manufacturing-bill-vote-11658179117\" rel=\"\">happened to purchase NVIDIA stocks right before the Senate bill passed<\/a><span>. Chip manufacturer NVIDIA rose over 5 percent in value following the news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In a microscopic sense, Pelosi personifies the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Sans any backbone or will to continue America\u2019s \u201cWE\u2019RE NUMBER ONE!\u201d public philosophy, the ruling class has used the opportunity of China\u2019s rise to cash in, then cash out. This is why the \u201ctop national security experts\u201d aren\u2019t parading from studio-to-studio, chests puffed out, wagging their fingers at anyone with even a remote sense of realism on the topic. <\/p>\n<p>No, suddenly everyone\u2019s a Peking pacifist.
