I&#8217;ll post my interview w\/him ASAP\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/xiPPkFsco8\">pic.twitter.com\/xiPPkFsco8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Eric Metaxas (@ericmetaxas) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ericmetaxas\/status\/1548361724637487106?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 16, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h3><strong>Cleese Says Comedians Can\u2019t Be Funny Anymore<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While acting as the keynote speaker at the FreedomFest conference in Las Vegas, Cleese was asked if comedians have the freedom to be funny in 2022, and the 82 year-old responded with an emphatic \u201cno.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s always been limitations on what they\u2019re allowed to say,\u201d Cleese explained, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/john-cleese-wokeness-disastrous-impact-comedy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a>. \u201cWhy you go to Moli\u00e8re and Louis XIV. I mean Moli\u00e8re had to be a bit careful. And there will always be limitations. I mean in England, until some ridiculous late date like 1965, all plays had to be submitted to what used to be a part of the palace called the Lord Chamberlain, and he would read it and there were hilarious letters used to go back was saying \u2018you may only say f\u2014 once,\u2019 this sort of- \u2018and you cannot say bugger. What you have to be able to do is to build without knowing where you\u2019re going because you\u2019ve never been there before. That\u2019s what creativity is\u2014you have to be allowed to build. And a lot of comedians now are sitting there and when they think of something, they say something like, \u2018Can I get away with it? I don\u2019t think so. So and so got into trouble, and he said that, oh, she said that.\u2019 You see what I mean? And that\u2019s the death of creativity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I would say at the moment, this is a difficult time, particularly for young comedians, but you see, my audience is much older, and they\u2019re simply not interested in most of the woke attitudes. Your information will not be shared with or sold to 3rd parties.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Not stopping there, Cleese proceeded to double down by saying that wokeness allows the\u00a0\u201ccritical mind\u201d to take over the creative, adding that they\u2019re \u201cdefinitely in opposition to each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can do the creation and then criticize it, but you can\u2019t do them at the same time,\u201d he said. \u201cSo if you\u2019re worried about offending people and constantly thinking of that, you are not going to be very creative. So I think it has a disastrous effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cleese went on to complain that \u201ceverything is more politicized now,\u201d even late night television, which has been taken over by radical liberal hosts like Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t like this when I first got to America,\u201d Cleese lamented. \u201cWhen I first got to America in the 60s\u2026 two things happened. First of all, I very much admired the cross-the-aisle friendships and thought we don\u2019t have that in England. We have real battles between the Tories and the Labour, but in America there seems to be these- and this was destroyed by Newt Gingrich, quite deliberately, for purposes of power. Rowling From \u2018Transphobic\u2019 Attacks By PC Mob<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Comedians Shouldn\u2019t Be \u2018Cancelled\u2019 Over Jokes<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Cleese also said that comedians should never be \u201ccancelled\u201d over jokes that they make.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you go to a Republican convention and tell anti-Democrat jokes, you\u2019ll get a very good response,\u201d Cleese said. \u201cIf you tell anti-Republican jokes, you won\u2019t. So you\u2019ve got to fit your material to some extent to your audience. And that\u2019s part of it\u2026 If you go to see your granny and to have tea with her, you don\u2019t start telling her sex jokes. Now that\u2019s not because it\u2019s illegal, it\u2019s just bad manners.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I think you would think what the audiences is and then you might shock them a little bit because that\u2019s fun,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd also, as I point out on stage, if you get into areas that are a little bit taboo, you actually get the biggest laughs, which is why sexual humor is often greeted with huge laughs when it\u2019s not particularly funny. It\u2019s to do with anxiety and the release of anxiety when people relax or laugh with spare energy that comes from the fact that they just laughed at something they\u2019ve been anxious about before.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Cleese Feels \u2018Great Sadness\u2019 Over Modern Comedy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Cleese concluded by saying that he feels a \u201cgreat sadness\u201d about how there are \u201cvery, very few really good comedy scripts\u201d these days.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I feel now is that very few people understand how to plot the comedy, so the comedies in America are really aimed at young men because they\u2019re the ones who go to the cinema on Friday night, which means that the box office looks good,\u201d he stated. \u201cAnd it\u2019s all done ultimately to money because we now have studios that are more interested in money than in making great movies and in the old days, they wanted to make great movies too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most stars would be far too afraid of being \u201ccancelled\u201d themselves to speak this candidly about wokeness, and just how far it has gone.
