Why you go to Moli\u00e8re and Louis XIV. I mean Moli\u00e8re had to be a bit careful. And there will always be limitations,\u201d Cleese explained. \u201cI mean in England, until some ridiculous late date like 1965, all plays had to be submitted to what used to be a part of the palace called the Lord Chamberlain, and he would read it and there were hilarious letters used to go back was saying \u2018you may only say f*** once,\u2019 this sort of \u2014 \u2018and you cannot say bugger. But you can say ____\u2019 \u2014 this sort of ridiculous negotiating letters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/john-cleese-cancels-talk-at-cambridge-university-cites-woke-rules\/\">Cleese<\/a> went on to say that the real problem was not that people were losing the freedom to be funny, but they were losing the freedom to create anything at all because they had to second guess everything before saying anything publicly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I think it\u2019s particularly worrying at the moment because you can only create in an atmosphere of freedom, where you\u2019re not checking everything you say critically before you move on,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat you have to be able to do is to build without knowing where you\u2019re going because you\u2019ve never been there before. That\u2019s what creativity is \u2014 you have to be allowed to build. And a lot of comedians now are sitting there and when they think of something, they say something like, \u2018Can I get away with it? I don\u2019t think so. So and so got into trouble, and he said that, oh, she said that.\u2019 You see what I mean? And that\u2019s the death of creativity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I would say at the moment, this is a difficult time, particularly for young comedians, but you see, my audience is much older, and they\u2019re simply not interested in most of the woke attitudes. I mean, they just think that you should try and be kind to people and that\u2019s no need to complicate it, you know?\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/monty-python-star-john-cleese-cancel-culture-misunderstands-the-main-purposes-of-life\/\">Cleese<\/a> added, noting that the problem didn\u2019t impact him personally quite as much as it did the younger up-and-coming comedians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can do the creation and then criticize it, but you can\u2019t do them at the same time. So if you\u2019re worried about offending people and constantly thinking of that, you are not going to be very creative. So I think it has a disastrous effect,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Cleese went on to say that, while he didn\u2019t believe any comedian should be \u201ccanceled\u201d for telling a joke that someone else found to be offensive, there was certainly some room for comedians themselves to tailor their jokes to certain audiences out of a sense of decorum.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you go to a Republican convention and tell anti-Democrat jokes, you\u2019ll get a very good response. If you tell anti-Republican jokes, you won\u2019t. So you\u2019ve got to fit your material to some extent to your audience. And that\u2019s part of it,\u201d he explained. \u201cIf you go to see your granny and to have tea with her, you don\u2019t start telling her sex jokes.
