(Kevin Lamarque\/Reuters) <\/p>\n<p>Under the president\u2019s Build Back Better plan, EV buyers would receive a $7,500 tax credit to buy a plug-in electric vehicle and up to $12,500 for union-made U.S. electric automobiles.<\/p>\n<p>Electric car makers have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/electric-automakers-make-last-ditch-plea-more-tax-credits-before-us-election-2022-06-21\/\">advocating<\/a> for these types of incentives, warning the industry could fail to reach the administration\u2019s goal to\u00a0push auto sales to 50 percent electric by 2030.\u00a0But Republicans assert that this proposal mainly benefits only the wealthy, citing Grist <a href=\"https:\/\/grist.org\/energy\/the-ev-tax-credit-can-save-you-thousands-if-youre-rich-enough\/?utm_campaign=sprout&#038;utm_source=twitter&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;utm_content=1614637515\">data<\/a>\u00a0indicating that 78 percent of EV tax credits were claimed by individuals earning more than $100,000 per year.<\/p>\n<p>In recent months, Buttigieg has been making the case that drivers can avoid the high cost of gas by switching to electric automobiles, claiming that they would \u201cnever have to worry about gas prices<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg touted the benefits of electric vehicles as a solution to higher gasoline prices during a July 19\u00a0House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee hearing.
