Version: 4.0.47--><p>A top official in the administration of former President Donald Trump was untruthful while testifying on adding a citizenship question to the Census, according to documents released July 20 by a top Democrat.<\/p>\n<p>Wilbur Ross, the secretary of Commerce during the Trump administration, told a congressional panel in 2018 that the move to place the question back on the Census was \u201csolely\u201d in response to a request from the Department of Justice, and that the department initiated the move.<\/p>\n<p>Ross also said that his interest in the matter had nothing to do with counting the number of illegal immigrants for apportionment purposes.<\/p>\n<p>But documents obtained and released (<a href=\"https:\/\/oversight.house.gov\/sites\/democrats.oversight.house.gov\/files\/2022.07.20%20COR%20Census%20Memorandum.pdf\">pdf<\/a>) by the House Oversight Committee show that Ross and Department of Commerce workers spent months exploring the legality of returning the question to the Census, that Ross repeatedly asked the department to provide the request, and that there were discussions about how the move would affect apportionment, or the way U.S. House of Representatives seats are allocated by state based on population.<\/p>\n<p>They also appeared to show\u00a0that the stated rationale for the move\u2014to improve enforcement of the Voting Rights Act\u2014originated with Ross\u2019s agency.<\/p>\n<p>The document release \u201cshows clearly how the Trump Administration secretly tried to manipulate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-census\">census<\/a> for political gain while lying to the public and Congress about their goals,\u201d Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-carolyn-maloney\">Carolyn Maloney<\/a> (D-N.Y.), chairwoman of the oversight panel, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Department of Commerce Inspectors General previously found (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oig.doc.gov\/OIGPublications\/Inspector-General-Letter-to-Majority-Leader-Charles-Schumer-and-Chairwoman-Carolyn-Maloney-re-OIG-Case-No-19-0728.pdf\">pdf<\/a>) that Ross \u201cmispresented the full rationale\u201d for reinstating the citizenship question while speaking before Congress, but prosecutors declined to prosecute him.<\/p>\n<p>Ross could not be reached for comment.<\/p>\n<p> Citizenship Question <\/p>\n<p>The question of one\u2019s citizenship was included in every Census from 1790 to 1950.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Justice in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/4340651-Text-of-Dec-2017-DOJ-letter-to-Census.html\">a letter<\/a> to the Census Bureau in December 2017 asked the bureau<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A top official in the administration of former President Donald Trump was untruthful while testifying on adding a citizenship question to the Census, according to documents released July 20 by a top Democrat.
