According to <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.proofpoint.com\/v2\/url?u=https-3A__www.campuspride.org_tpc_records_&#038;d=DwMF-g&#038;c=euGZstcaTDllvimEN8b7jXrwqOf-v5A_CdpgnVfiiMM&#038;r=9xsJZqFt_fGPjsXKbdYcepIKn1w_rSifPJARMjdRsDk&#038;m=sZsBYL-mTZYhrquOR33kxQJbJHfNQMlWMRJgqJh43BM&#038;s=Kk-DwYopLlDfyMvm4Z94MPwDL-H1so9dwurJXkAgfzQ&#038;e=\">CampusPride.org<\/a>, at least 242 campuses nationwide now do the same. But this headline caught my eye because Emory is practically in my backyard. It\u2019s only a matter of time before the deadly \u201cpreferred pronoun\u201d virus spreads to Georgia\u2019s public institutions like the one where I teach.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps more compelling than the headline itself, however, were the comments accompanying the <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.proofpoint.com\/v2\/url?u=https-3A__www.facebook.com_page_73949382289_search_-3Fq-3Duniversity-2520will-2520begin-2520letting-2520students-2520choose-2520their-2520preferred-2520pronouns&#038;d=DwMF-g&#038;c=euGZstcaTDllvimEN8b7jXrwqOf-v5A_CdpgnVfiiMM&#038;r=9xsJZqFt_fGPjsXKbdYcepIKn1w_rSifPJARMjdRsDk&#038;m=sZsBYL-mTZYhrquOR33kxQJbJHfNQMlWMRJgqJh43BM&#038;s=92H8dUtU3WKD28UI01qlrhD0QcZtVMKjVbk7hJmecgE&#038;e=\">Facebook post<\/a> where I first encountered it. Some readers praised Emory for its wokeness; others criticized it for the same reason. But several expressed genuine bewilderment, essentially asking, \u201cWhat\u2019s the big deal?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Quite frankly, the subject is significant for several reasons. Pronouns themselves are obviously important as they reflect both reality and grammatical logic. But the totalitarian urge to compel speech, which is at the heart of the pronoun debate, is an even bigger deal, threatening our fundamental right to think and speak freely \u2014 and ultimately, to tell the truth.<\/p>\n<p>That is especially true for college professors, who are in the truth business. To remain true to ourselves, to our raison d\u2019etre, we have a responsibility to confront reality while guiding others within our sphere of influence to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>By referring to a male student as \u201cshe,\u201d we shirk that responsibility. We deny reality. We perpetuate an untruth. In a word, we lie.<\/p>\n<p>Nor is it \u201ckind\u201d or \u201cpolite\u201d merely to accede to the student\u2019s wishes. Promoting lies is never in the best interests of students \u2014 or of the academy. If that male student genuinely believes he is a woman, he is at the very least delusional, possibly to the point of\u00a0 contemplating self-harm, as nearly half of transgender youth have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/lgbtq-youth-suicide-the-trevor-project-mental-health-2022\/\">considered<\/a> suicide. Reinforcing people\u2019s dangerous delusions is neither rational nor compassionate. It is every bit as enabling as handing an alcoholic a bottle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, requiring professors to use students\u2019 \u201cpreferred pronouns\u201d imposes an unreasonable burden. To be fair, the article doesn\u2019t say Emory is making this a requirement \u2014 yet. But we all know how the Left operates. Any onerous new policy introduced as \u201coptional\u201d quickly becomes mandatory.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Emory students can now go online and choose from an array of possible pronouns, including he\/him\/his, she\/her\/hers, they\/them\/theirs, xie\/hir\/hirs, and ze\/zir\/zirs. These will then be added to their student profiles and appear on class rosters.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Thus, to appear \u201cinclusive,\u201d Emory faculty must now memorize not only students\u2019 names but also their pronouns.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Professors already have a lot on their plates. With approximately 125 students each semester, it\u2019s all I can do to learn their names. It takes me several weeks, for which I apologize in advance while soliciting patience.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So why can\u2019t I do the same with pronouns \u2014 just work at it until I get them down? For one thing, the <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.proofpoint.com\/v2\/url?u=https-3A__www.facebook.com_watch_-3Fv-3D537849190597689&#038;d=DwMF-g&#038;c=euGZstcaTDllvimEN8b7jXrwqOf-v5A_CdpgnVfiiMM&#038;r=9xsJZqFt_fGPjsXKbdYcepIKn1w_rSifPJARMjdRsDk&#038;m=sZsBYL-mTZYhrquOR33kxQJbJHfNQMlWMRJgqJh43BM&#038;s=0TVUJg6tmOVwNwWs2w88Ata_5YdoyJTvB_qRDxfPEfw&#038;e=\">kind of people who demand \u201ctheir pronouns\u201d<\/a> generally seem intolerant of such ordinary human frailty. As I suggested above, remembering all those pronouns is just one more mental chore to occupy my time \u2014 which is better spent teaching writing, as I\u2019m paid to do.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the bottom line is that I simply don\u2019t want to memorize students\u2019 made-up pronouns, nor should I have to. The English language already has a perfectly good set of pronouns that cover every possibility. Unlike names, which are specific to individuals, pronouns are not \u201cowned.\u201d They are grammatical constructs that identify people based on observable characteristics and therefore belong to all who speak the language.<\/p>\n<p>You should no more demand that people refer to you by specific pronouns than you should insist they describe you with your \u201cpreferred adjectives.\u201d To do so is rude and selfish. No one has any right to make such demands of others.<\/p>\n<p>So no, I will not be using students\u2019 \u201cpreferred pronouns,\u201d even if my university mandates it. I invite like-minded colleagues at Emory and elsewhere to join me in resisting this woke authoritarianism while we still can.
