Some officials have labeled it an effort to \u201cillegally obtain\u201d information on residents with concealed carry permits, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/missouri-sheriff-says-even-threat-arrest-he-will-not-release-gun-owners-info-fbi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fox News<\/a> reported Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Scotland County Sheriff Bryan Whitney told his constituents in a letter Monday that he \u201cwill not\u201d cooperate with attempts to obtain such data, according to the outlet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the sheriff of Scotland County, I want all my citizens to know that I will not allow, cooperate or release any CCW information to the FBI, \u2018even at the threat of a federal arrest,&#8217;\u201d he reportedly wrote in a letter obtained by Fox News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPoint blank, \u2018I will go down with the ship if need be,&#8217;\u201d the letter said.<\/p>\n<p>Whitney consulted with legal counsel, on his own dime, prior to releasing his letter to the public on Monday, he told <a href=\"https:\/\/ktvo.com\/news\/local\/scotland-county-sheriff-plans-to-hide-gun-owners-personal-info-from-fbi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KTVO<\/a>. He also reportedly said he will hide all concealed carry <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/02\/17\/missouri-gun-law-supremacy-clause-merrick-garland-eric-shmitt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">weapons<\/a> records at an off-site and secure location in case the FBI issues a federal search warrant. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/06\/18\/missouri-mike-parson-eric-schmitt-responds-department-justice-second-amendment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: \u2018Missouri Will Defend Its Citizens\u2019: State Shoots Back At DOJ Over Gun Laws)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The FBI said the information it seeks to obtain \u201cfalls under the oversight of the CJIS [Criminal Justice Information Services] Advisory Policy Board,\u201d according to KTVO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of the planned Missouri audit, a small sampling of system transactions is to be inspected for compliance and to ensure there is no misuse of CJIS systems,\u201d the FBI said. \u201cAt no point would auditors require access to lists such as state approved concealed carry holders, nor would the CJIS Division retain information beyond what is necessary to address a specific compliance concern.
