Gavin Newsom\u2019s trip to Washington D.C. last week placed his policies under a national spotlight. The governor met with officials in President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-joe-biden\">Joe Biden<\/a>\u2019s administration and Democrat lawmakers last week to discuss how the state can aid in supporting the Democrat party\u2019s strategies.<\/p>\n<p>Before departing to D.C., Newsom signed a series of gun control bills. Notably one signed July 12 allows local municipalities and Californians to sue gun manufacturers. Two days later, Newsom met with several Democrat senators to highlight his efforts of keeping Californians \u201cfrom gun violence, wildfires and Republican efforts to roll back reproductive rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Newsom and Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Connecticut) discussed California\u2019s strict gun control laws, which Newsom attributes to California\u2019s leadership in reducing gun violence. Murphy has also been a progressive advocate of strict gun control measures.<\/p>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2022\/07\/19\/0e1c6f31-5837-6ba3-e78a-38abf5c9a17a-1200x800.jpg\"><\/a> Sen. (Courtesy of the California governor\u2019s office) <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur kids, families and communities deserve streets free of gun violence and gun makers must be held accountable for their role in this crisis,\u201d Newsom said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2022\/07\/12\/new-california-law-holds-gun-makers-liable-the-gun-industry-can-no-longer-hide\/\">statement<\/a>. \u201cNearly every industry is held liable when people are hurt or killed by their products\u2014guns should be no different.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The governor also met with Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) to discuss how California can help senators expand abortion services, as Newsom beefed up the state\u2019s support of abortion after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the 1973 decision of Roe v. Wade, which deemed abortion a constitutional right.<\/p>\n<p>Newsom responded to the court\u2019s ruling by enshrining the ability to have an abortion into California\u2019s constitution, even though the state already protects abortion under its privacy laws.<\/p>\n<p>During his trip, Newsom also accepted the Frank Newman Award for State Innovation from the Education Commission of the States, which drew criticism from Republicans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExactly which education accomplishment is<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>California Gov.
