The move triggered speculation that Fauci would retire before then.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not going to retire. No, no, I\u2019m not going to retire. I may step down from my current position at some time,\u201d Fauci told <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/healthcare\/3565473-fauci-im-not-going-to-retire\/\">The Hill<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cI said a very innocent but true thing. I said whether it\u2019s Donald Trump or it\u2019s Joe Biden\u2019s second term, I don\u2019t intend to be in my current position in January of 2025,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Fauci, 81, has headed the\u00a0National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease since 1984 but became a household name in early 2020 when he began delivering interviews to media outlets about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-covid-19\">COVID-19<\/a> pandemic, essentially serving as the federal government\u2019s chief pandemic spokesperson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat happens between now and then I have not decided, but the one thing I do know is that I have other things that I want to do in a professional way that I want to have the capability\u2014while I still have the energy and the passion to do them,\u201d he told The Hill Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>As the pandemic dragged on, Fauci became a polarizing figure for his often dire predictions about the trajectory of COVID-19\u2019s spread in the United States.
