Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.), who is the chairman of the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (PSI) and whose home is in Atlanta,\u00a0announced the subpoena on Monday, adding that\u00a0Carvajal had been asked to testify later this month.<\/p>\n<p>Ossoff <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bluestein\/status\/1549147554142720000\">told<\/a> CNN that\u00a0Carvajal\u2019s testimony is \u201cvital to our ongoing congressional oversight and to this senate investigation,\u201d adding that the PSI had taken the \u201cextraordinary step\u201d of issuing a subpoena to the former BOP director because the Biden administration has \u201crefused to allow\u201d\u00a0Carvajal to testify.<\/p>\n<p>The hearing is set for July 26.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MiryamLipper\/status\/1549136903248683008\/photo\/1\">press release<\/a>, the\u00a0Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations also said it has repeatedly requested testimony\u00a0from Carvajal dating back to this spring, but that \u201cthe Department of Justice has refused to make him voluntarily available to testify.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo date, the Subcommittee has been provided no legal basis that would prevent Director Carvajal\u2019s testimony before the Subcommittee, and the Department of Justice continues to refuse to make him available to testify,\u201d\u00a0the\u00a0statement read.<\/p>\n<p>Carvajal\u00a0began his career with the bureau\u00a0in 1992 and served as the\u00a0assistant director for the Correctional Programs Division before being appointed as\u00a0BOP director on\u00a0Feb. 25, 2020, shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic began.<\/p>\n<p> Widespread Misconduct <\/p>\n<p>He resigned from his job in January the year after, just months after an\u00a0Associated Press\u00a0report\u00a0revealed widespread misconduct, abuse, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/mkt_app\/federal-bureau-of-prisons-director-resigning-after-report-reveals-jails-are-hotbed-of-abuse_4194374.html\">corruption within the correctional agency<\/a> that appeared to have largely gone ignored.<\/p>\n<p>The same report also found that over 100 workers at BOP had been arrested, convicted, or sentenced for crimes since 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Cases included a\u00a0warden indicted for sexual abuse,\u00a0an associate warden charged with murder, guards accepting bribes in return for smuggling drugs, and\u00a0rampant sexual assault\u00a0at a women\u2019s prison<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Carvajal, the outgoing\u00a0Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) director, has been\u00a0subpoenaed to appear before a\u00a0Senate committee investigating\u00a0abuse, corruption, and misconduct in the federal prison system, including at\u00a0the U.S. Penitentiary in Atlanta.
