This information is often vital to criminal investigations as well as important to understanding ancient civilizations.<\/p>\n<p>Now though, some woke <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/gender-activists-push-to-bar-anthropologists-from-identifying-human-remains-as-male-or-female\/\">scholars say<\/a> the time for classifying human remains by gender and race is gone since we cannot know how the deceased person identified, even if they lived hundreds of years ago.<\/p>\n<p>One group called the\u00a0Trans Doe Task Force\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/transdoetaskforce.org\/trans-doe-task-force-presenting-at-tpath-conference-converging-crises-in-transgender-activism-health-and-rights-in-2021\/\">says<\/a> it actually maintains its own database of missing and unidentified people who the group thinks could be transgender or \u201cgender-variant\u201d because\u00a0most databases don\u2019t allow you to compare missing to unidentified \u201cacross different binary sex categories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The group says it combs databases of the missing and\u00a0unidentified looking for \u201ccontextual clues such as decedents wearing clothing culturally coded to a gender other than their assigned sex.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The transgender-led non-profit says it aims to\u00a0\u201cexplore ways in which current standards in forensic human identification do a disservice to people who do not clearly fit the gender binary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year, a study posited that the medieval remains of one individual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/history\/2021\/08\/11\/nonbinary-ancient-medieval-finland\/\">suggested<\/a> they could be non-binary since the body was probably male, but the person was\u00a0buried in feminine clothes. However, that individual likely had XXY chromosomes, or\u00a0Klinefelter syndrome, which can cause low testosterone.<\/p>\n<p>One professor actually argued earlier this year that there are actually<\/p>\n<p>The idea of a gender binary was \u201cimposed by Christian colonizers,\u201d she claims.<\/p>\n<p>A self-reported master\u2019s archaeology student in Canada called it \u201cbullshit\u201d that archaeologists assign gender to human remains based on their biology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy trans+non-binary friends: you might know the argument that the archaeologists who find your bones one day will assign you the same gender as you had at birth, so regardless of whether you transition, you can\u2019t escape your assigned sex. The \u2018bioarchaeology of the individual\u2019 is what we aim for, factoring in absolutely everything we discover about a person into a nuanced and open-ended biography of their life,\u201d Palladino said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd even IF some sh***y archaeologist in the future misgenders you, that will never change who you were, regardless of whether you\u2019ve medically or socially transitioned, regardless of anything. You are you, a dignified human, and always will be, even in death,\u201d she concluded<\/p>\n<p>Some archeology scholars have criticized the push to disregard biological sex in classifying human skeletons.<\/p>\n<p>San Jose State archaeology Professor Elizabeth Weiss <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/gender-activists-push-to-bar-anthropologists-from-identifying-human-remains-as-male-or-female\/\">told<\/a> The College Fix the movement amounts to\u00a0\u201cideologically-motivated fudging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Weiss also told the outlet that, \u201csexing skeletal remains is a critical skill in forensics and any diminishing of this skill will negatively impact criminal investigations, denying the victims and their families justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, some activists are focused on erasing race from human remains classifications, rather than biological gender.<\/p>\n<p>A January <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/ajpa.24212\">study<\/a> claimed forensic anthropologists have not taken into account the \u201cracist context\u201d of the American criminal justice system.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that, trying to figure out the ancestry of human remains might hurt efforts to identify them because of \u201centrenched racial biases,\u201d claimed the <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/ajpa.24212\">study<\/a> by Elizabeth DiGangi of Binghamton University and Jonathan Bethard of the University of South Florida.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Woke activists are calling for anthropologists to stop classifying human remains as \u201cmale\u201d or \u201cfemale\u201d as well as by racial ancestry.
