If somebody says, \u2018You\u2019ll leave when we don\u2019t have COVID anymore,\u2019 then I will be 105. I think we\u2019re going to be living with this,\u201d Fauci, 81,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/07\/18\/anthony-fauci-interview-covid-00046189\">told<\/a> Politico in an interview published on Monday morning in confirming he\u2019s retiring at the end of Biden\u2019s term in office, which is Jan. 21, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Fauci has been the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) since 1984. During the COVID-19, he became a household name when he became the face of the federal government\u2019s COVID-19 pandemic response, often generating criticism from Republicans and conservatives about his generally dire predictions about the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Of his relationship with former President Donald Trump, Fauci said that \u201cwe developed an interesting relationship \u2026 two guys from New York, different in their opinions and their ideology, but still, two guys who grew up in the same environments of this city. I think that we are related to each other in that regard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And if Republicans win back either the House or Senate in 2022, Fauci noted that he will likely be investigated by GOP lawmakers.
