Despite the end of the operational pause, however, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2022\/07\/16\/world\/russia-ukraine-war-news\">Russian military<\/a> hasn\u2019t achieved any major gains. Ground assaults on the two different axes in the Donbas didn\u2019t produce any results for the Russian forces.\n<\/p>\n<p>As we have said previously, the recent successes of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/liveblog\/2022\/7\/16\/russia-ukraine-live-news-kyiv-accuses-moscow-of-media-terror\">Russian military<\/a> in the Donbas (Severodonetsk and Lysychansk) actually made the Ukrainian defense stronger because they shortened the frontline. Indeed, that was probably the reason why the Ukrainian military withdrew from its positions in and around the two cities in the first place\u2014but not before exacting a very heavy price from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/07\/17\/1111911343\/russia-strikes-south-ukraine-city-presses-attacks-in-east\">Russian attackers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>News from the Southern Front in Ukraine<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>In its daily estimate of the war, the British Ministry of Defense focused on the southern front around Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/07\/17\/russia-strikes-south-ukraine-city-presses-attacks-in-the-east.html\">Ukrainian military<\/a> has launched a counteroffensive in the region and has been making gains, forcing the Russian forces to dig in and stay on the defensive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussia is reinforcing its defensive positions across the occupied areas of the South of Ukraine. This includes the movement of manpower, equipment and defensive stores between Mariupol and Zaporizhia, and in Kherson,\u201d the British Military Intelligence\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DefenceHQ\/status\/1548542893865959424\">assessed<\/a>,\u201d adding that the \u201cRussian forces in Melitopol are also increasing security measures.\u201d\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUkrainian forces have been applying pressure on the Russian defensive line in Kherson Oblast for over a month now, and recent political statements from both Zelenskky and the Deputy Prime Minister have warned of forthcoming offense operations to force Russia out of the areas it currently controls,\u201d the British Ministry of Defense stated.\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRussian defensive moves are likely a response to anticipated Ukrainian offensives, to demands made by Defence Minister Shoygu on a recent visit to the Donbas, and also to the attacks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/07\/17\/1111022553\/ukraine-villagers-flee-russia-controlled-kherson-region-bike\">Ukraine<\/a> is launching against command posts, logistic nodes and troop concentrations,\u201d the British Ministry of Defense added.\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_52169\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-52169\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A service member of pro-Russian troops is seen atop a tank during fighting in Ukraine-Russia conflict near the Azovstal steel plant in the southern port city of Mariupol, Ukraine May 5, 2022. REUTERS\/Alexander Ermochenko<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cGiven the pressures on Russian manpower, the reinforcement of the South whilst the fight for the Donbas continues likely indicates the seriousness with which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/world\/ukraine\/2022\/07\/17\/russia-ukraine-live-updates\/10079194002\/\">Russian commanders<\/a> view the threat,\u201d the British Military Intelligence stated.\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Russian Casualties\u00a0<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KyivIndependent\/status\/1548577795286384640\/photo\/1\">claimed<\/a>\u00a0that as of Sunday, Ukrainian forces have killed approximately 38,300\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/04\/15\/ukraine-facial-recognition-warfare\/\">Russian troops<\/a>\u00a0(and wounded approximately thrice that number), destroyed 220 fighter, attack, and transport jets, 188 attack and transport helicopters, 1,684 tanks, 846 artillery pieces, 3,879 armored personnel carriers, 248\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrive.com\/the-war-zone\/44479\/the-truth-about-russias-terrifying-tos-1a-thermobaric-rocket-launchers-now-in-ukraine\">Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS)<\/a>, 15 boats and cutters, 2,746 vehicles and fuel tanks, 110 anti-aircraft batteries, 688 tactical unmanned aerial systems, 68 special equipment platforms, such as bridging vehicles, and four mobile Iskander ballistic missile systems, and 166 cruise missiles shot down by the Ukrainian air defenses.<\/p>\n<p><em>1945\u2019s New Defense and National Security Columnist,\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/sofrep.com\/author\/stavros-atlamazoglou\/\"><em>Stavros Atlamazoglou<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0is a seasoned defense journalist\u00a0specializing in\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/soldiers-one-militarys-most-dangerous-161118164.html\">special operations<\/a><em>, a Hellenic Army veteran (national service with the 575th Marine Battalion and Army HQ), and a Johns Hopkins University graduate.
