During that meeting, Jenkins said to the approximately 25 employees that she would not fire anyone that day but planned on meeting with staffers for a possible \u201creshuffling\u201d of the office,\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/politics\/article\/Inside-first-meeting-with-Brooke-Jenkins-as-SF-DA-17293728.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SFGATE.com<\/a>\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n<p>Through Jenkin\u2019s reshuffling, Managing Attorney Arcelia Hurtado reportedly lost her job first.<\/p>\n<p>Hurtado served as a representative for The Innocence Commission, which Boudin established in 2020 to review cases of those who were wrongfully convicted. In a recent interview with\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kqed.org\/news\/11919634\/meet-brooke-jenkins-san-franciscos-new-district-attorney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KQED<\/a>, Jenkins said she would support the commission.<\/p>\n<p>However, Lara Bazelon, chair of the commission and law professor at the University of San Francisco, told SFGATE.com that Jenkin\u2019s decision to fire Hurtado is \u201cdeeply concerning,\u201d considering Mayor Breed\u2019s brother could receive leniency with possible release from prison following his conviction for carjacking and manslaughter.<\/p>\n<p>Other staffers booted by Jenkins were the former DA\u2019s chief of staff, Kate Chatfield, who\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChatfieldKate\/status\/1548046688522084360\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted<\/a>\u00a0on Friday that Boudin\u2019s reformations would disappear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe resentencing\/innocence commission unit: gone,\u201d Chatfield said. \u201cPolice accountability: gone. Data and transparency: gone. Political corruption investigation: gone. Champion for victims and children: demoted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added, \u201cChampion for humane, hugely-popular, and successful treatment programs: gone. Latino\/a outreach: gone. Support for trafficked children: gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jenkin\u2019s reshuffling also included Tal Klement, assistant chief of general crimes, who\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/talklement\/status\/1548024678727372807\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted<\/a> he would never stop fighting for real criminal justice reform following his firing.<\/p>\n<p>Jenkin\u2019s dismissed Boudin\u2019s communication director and policy advisor, Rachel Marshall, the former director of data, analytics, and research, Mikaela Rabinowitz, and the managing attorney of the independent investigations bureau Lateef Gray.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Jenkin\u2019s said she would do everything she could to restore accountability and consequences to the city\u2019s criminal justice system while still using progressive reforms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have seen firsthand the imbalances and disproportionate impacts of our criminal justice system,\u201d she\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/sfmayor.org\/article\/brooke-jenkins-sworn-san-francisco-district-attorney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>During a press conference, she called San Francisco \u201ca city of second chances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the truth is we have to draw a line with people who choose hate, violence, and a life of crime,\u201d Jenkins said, according to\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/thegrio.com\/2022\/07\/10\/brooke-jenkins-to-be-san-francisco-da\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Grio<\/a>. \u201cI want to make clear: holding offenders accountable does not preclude us from moving forward with vital and important reforms to our criminal justice system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She served as an Assistant DA in the city\u2019s DA office for approximately seven years until resigning during Boudin\u2019s reign, noting dissatisfaction with the direction of the office.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Breed said she hears from frustrated residents daily about feeling unsafe and the city\u2019s accountability.<\/p>\n<p>Under Boudin\u2019s rule, the former DA eliminated cash bail for suspects, directed his department to refuse to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and prosecuted fewer shoplifters.
