The efforts are attempting to overcome the difficulty of growing large quantities of stem cells under the Earth\u2019s gravity by conducting efforts beyond the planet\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn zero G, there\u2019s no force on the cells, so they can just grow in a different way,\u201d Svendsen said.<\/p>\n<p>The particular cells used in the Cedars-Sinai experiment are pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). These materials are utilized by scientists for a variety of treatments, ranging from skin to blood cells.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHuman iPSCs are ideal for creating and testing potential treatments that can be tailored to an individual,\u201d ISS National Laboratory <a href=\"https:\/\/www.issnationallab.org\/iss360\/spacex-crs-25-mission-overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explains<\/a>\u00a0regarding the mission.\u00a0 \u201cMicrogravity may overcome some of the problems involved in the processes by which stem cells divide and become different types of cells, which could advance the manufacturing of iPSCs for the treatment of various diseases on Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leaders at\u00a0Cedars-Sinai said in an announcement of the project last year that they are excited to pursue the research with the goal of advancing clinical treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoing to space to improve stem cell production is consistent with the innovative discovery programs at the\u00a0Cedars-Sinai\u00a0Board of Governors Regenerative Medicine Institute,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.edu\/research\/news\/cedars-science\/2021\/sending-stem-cells-into-space.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0Shlomo Melmed, MB, ChB, executive vice president of Academic Affairs and dean of the Medical Faculty at\u00a0Cedars-Sinai. \u201cThis bold next step in the evolution of this forward-looking science will advance our progress toward future cell therapies. The potential of regenerative medicine is truly out of this world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The experiment also involves growing a similar set of stem cells on Earth for comparison.
