The colorant, though, still remains as an ingredient.<\/p>\n<p>In the proposed class action suit, filed in Oakland, California, Jenile Thames claims Mars\u00a0is endangering unsuspecting Skittles consumers.<\/p>\n<p>TiO2 is currently not banned in the United States, and the ingredient is listed on packs of the treat. But the suit claims that\u2019s not sufficient, since the packaging is red and the ingredients listed in black are hard to read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA reasonable consumer would expect that [Skittles] can be safely purchased and consumed as marketed and sold,\u201d the complaint said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/mars-skittles-lawsuit-idAFL1N2YW1DB\">according<\/a> to Reuters. \u201cHowever, the products are not safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jaydee Hanson, Senior Policy Analyst at the Center for Food Safety, announced in a statement in 2016 that Mars Inc. was moving to phase out toxins in their products.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are pleased to see that MARS has taken a positive step toward eliminating toxic, unnecessary nanomaterials from its line of food products,\u201d Hanson said. \u201cWe urge the company to speed up the removal of these additives, especially given the grave health concerns associated with titanium dioxide and other nanoparticles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudies have shown that the human health risks associated with ingesting nanoparticles of many common food additives far outweigh any utility for producers,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cThere are plenty of non-toxic alternatives available and we urge MARS and others to commit to not using any engineered nanomaterials in human and animal food products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mars.com\/docs\/default-source\/Press-Releases\/mars-incorporated-to-remove-all-artificial-colors-from-its-human-food-portfolio.pdf?sfvrsn=0\">link<\/a> to the Mars Inc. statement on the Center for Food Safety site announcing the apparent changes now redirects to a Mars.com page that says, \u201cThe page you\u2019re looking for have been removed or is temporarily unavailable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Titanium dioxide was officially\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ehslawinsights.com\/2022\/04\/titanium-dioxide-e171-banned-as-an-additive-in-foods-in-the-eu\/\">banned<\/a> in the EU on February 7, though companies have a six-month transition period to remove the additive from its goods.<\/p>\n<p>TiO2 can induce damage to one\u2019s DNA, as well as cause brain and organ damage and cause lesions in the liver and kidneys, the lawsuit charges, Reuters reported, adding that the additive is often found in paint, adhesives, plastics, and some roofing materials.<\/p>\n<p>Thames is seeking an unspecified amount in damages<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/leftists-complain-about-donald-trump-jrs-refugee-amanda-prestigiacomo\">Leftists Complain About Donald Trump Jr.\u2019s Refugee-Skittles Analogy.
