One company on this planet produces a whopping <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/14\/briefing\/semiconductor-bill-congress-biden.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">90% of the most advanced semiconductors<\/a>. It is located in none other than Taiwan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With China ramping up its rhetoric and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-china-59900139\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">military air maneuvers<\/a> in the last two years into Taiwan\u2019s Air Defense Zone, I think it\u2019s fair to say we may have put way too many eggs \u2013 or chips, so to speak \u2013 in one basket.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/thepoliticalinsider.com\/china-v-u-s-war-game-highlights-disastrous-weaknesses-in-our-military-might\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China v. U.S. War Game Highlights Disastrous Weaknesses In Our Military Might<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Why Not Bring Semiconductors To The U.S.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/14\/briefing\/semiconductor-bill-congress-biden.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Three decades ago<\/a>, the U.S. market share of semiconductors was 37%; today, it is down to 12%. Then, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/25\/business\/economy\/chips-semiconductors-shortage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">demand for semiconductors<\/a> rose 17%; from 2019 to 2020, with the surge of military weaponry heading to Ukraine and the need to replenish depleted stockpiles, that demand is bound to continue increasing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To be fair, bipartisan support has made it easier for the industry to set up its semiconductor factories here in the good old U.S. of A. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A bill allocating <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/06\/22\/chips-act-funding-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$52 billion<\/a> to breathe life into the domestic semiconductor industry was drafted last year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This bill would provide subsidies for these companies to operate within the United States. Some may argue that this is giving financial breaks for the fat cat technology industry, which isn\u2019t incorrect. First, however, let\u2019s take a look at the landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">How corporate welfare works<\/p>\n<p>The semiconductor industry (Intel, etc) got $9.5 billion in taxpayer subsidies over 20 years. Then it offshored 150,000 jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Last year it made $70 billion in profits. But it says it&#8217;s struggling. So the government is giving it a $50 billion bailout.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dan Price (@DanPriceSeattle) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DanPriceSeattle\/status\/1547655746313064449?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 14, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/14\/briefing\/semiconductor-bill-congress-biden.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It costs roughly<\/a> $10 billion to build a semiconductor factory. As it stands, a fair amount of countries, including South Korea, Japan, and India, cover 30% to 50% of that cost. That doesn\u2019t even take into account China, which covers 70%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To put it simply, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/14\/briefing\/semiconductor-bill-congress-biden.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CEO of Intel Pat Gelsinger<\/a> broke it down like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cIt is not economically viable for us to compete in the world market if everyone else that we\u2019re competing with is seeing 30 to 50 percent lower cost structures.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Unfortunately, like most things in D.C., the bill is stalled.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But think for a second \u2013 for the cost of what our government sent to Ukraine, we could have had six semiconductor plants.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What would be the cost of a war halfway around the world against China?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Estimates for the cost of the Iraq War vary widely, but the lowest figure seems to be $2 trillion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You can do the math on how many semiconductor plants that could have built.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">All Eyes On August<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Members of industry and the Department of Commerce hope the stalled CHIP bill will get passed before Congress leaves for the August break. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/14\/briefing\/semiconductor-bill-congress-biden.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo warned Congressional leaders<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cWe are now in a very dangerous situation in which we are utterly reliant on Taiwan for the vast, vast majority of our most advanced semiconductors, which are the exact kind of semiconductors you need for military equipment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">She\u2019s not the only one trying to push on Congress to take action. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/25\/business\/economy\/chips-semiconductors-shortage.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Intel agreed to invest<\/a> $20 billion in an Ohio-based facility for two chip factories employing 3,000 people. However, that project has had to be put on pause according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/06\/22\/chips-act-funding-congress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Intel spokesman William Moss<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAs we said in our January announcement, the scope and pace of our expansion in Ohio will depend heavily on funding from the CHIPS Act. Unfortunately, CHIPS Act funding has moved more slowly than we expected and we still don\u2019t know when it will get done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">McConnell just walked away from bipartisan legislation to compete with China on semiconductor chips because Democrats want to lower prescription drug costs. Besides the defense implications of this, there are real everyday concerns regarding this sort of control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When there was a chip shortage during the pandemic American carmakers were forced to pull back and, in some cases, suspend production of vehicles. This saw a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedetroitbureau.com\/2022\/06\/used-cars-fetching-higher-prices-as-demand-outstrips-supply\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">37% price increase<\/a> in used cars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Spoke with Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DougBurgum?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DougBurgum<\/a> and Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GlennYoungkin?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@GlennYoungkin<\/a> about the need for Congress to finally pass the CHIPs Act and address the global chip shortage. But I think they seek to control as much as they can economically, and they have ramped up their military production and covert actions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The cybersecurity implications of China taking over the most significant production of semiconductor chips is massive, given that these are the same chips that go into everything from our iPhones to our jet planes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Perhaps There is Another Way To Push Back Chinese Aggression<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepoliticalinsider.com\/biden-goes-off-script-to-commit-america-to-defend-taiwan-in-military-conflict\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Biden made waves<\/a> earlier this year when he replied \u2018Yes\u2019 to a reporter who asked him:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cYou didn\u2019t want to get involved in the Ukraine conflict militarily for obvious reasons. Are you willing to get involved militarily to defend Taiwan if it comes to that?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When all signs indicate we would not fare well in a military battle with China, perhaps this rhetoric is ill-advised. However, finding ways to make it easier for the industry to produce these chips stateside could bolster national security and economic benefits for the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">JUST IN: On Wednesday, Hakeem Jeffries <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepJeffries?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RepJeffries<\/a>, chair of the House Democratic Caucus, said: &#8220;significant progress&#8221; had been made on a bill proposed to boost the U.S. semiconductor industry, and he believes it will be agreed upon by July. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/US?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#US<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Democrat?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Democrat<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FpuEAQqICH\">pic.twitter.com\/FpuEAQqICH<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 BNN United States (@BNNUS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BNNUS\/status\/1547281829861896194?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 13, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/14\/briefing\/semiconductor-bill-congress-biden.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">An additional five people<\/a> are hired for every semiconductor worker to assist with supply activities.
