But\u00a0Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), the chairman of the Jan. 6 committee, rejected his claims of executive privilege, and the\u00a0committee voted in late March to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/house-jan-6-panel-advances-charges-against-peter-navarro-dan-scavino_4369090.html\">advance criminal charges<\/a> against Navarro.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/former-trump-adviser-peter-navarro-charged-with-contempt-of-congress_4510761.html\">A grand jury indicted Navarro on June 3<\/a> on two counts: one for his refusal to produce the documents the committee requested, and the other for his refusal to comply with the committee\u2019s subpoena to show up and testify. Each count carries a maximum of one-year imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>At a status hearing on July 15, federal prosecutor Elizabeth Aloi told U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta that the Justice Department had offered to let Navarro\u00a0plead guilty to a single count instead of the two he was indicted with.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors also said the deal would mean they would not have sought more than the minimum 30-day jail time.<\/p>\n<p>But the deal would have required Navarro to \u201ccomply with the January 6 committee subpoena to the satisfaction of the Justice Department,\u201d Aloi said.<\/p>\n<p>Navarro attended the hearing with two defense attorneys.\u00a0He had been representing himself before he was indicted on the criminal charges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a complicated constitutional case involving separation of powers,\u201d John Irving, one of the defense attorneys,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/joshgerstein\/status\/1547991284249292806\">told reporters<\/a> outside the courthouse after the hearing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt involves not only the President of the United States asserting his executive privilege, but [also] over 50<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former White House trade adviser Peter Navarro has declined a plea offer to plead guilty to a contempt of Congress charge,\u00a0the lead federal prosecutor in the case told a judge on Friday.
