The <a href=\"https:\/\/aspr.hhs.gov\/legal\/PHE\/Pages\/covid19-15jul2022.aspx\">order was extended<\/a> to Oct. 13, 2022, \u201cas a result of the continued consequences of the Coronavirus Disease 2019 pandemic,\u201d Becerra said in the order.<\/p>\n<p>The health emergency declaration\u2014which allows some Americans to get free COVID-19 testing, vaccines, and treatment\u2014was widely anticipated. Unnamed officials earlier this week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-07-11\/white-house-to-extend-covid-public-health-emergency#xj4y7vzkg\">told<\/a> Bloomberg and other news outlets that the White House would extend the order.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Public Health Emergency declaration continues to provide us with tools and authorities needed to respond,\u201d a Biden administration official told CNN this week. \u201cThe [order] provides essential capabilities and flexibilities to hospitals to better care for patients, particularly if we were to see a significant increase in hospitalizations in the coming weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those reports prompted pushback, including from the Wall Street Journal\u2019s editorial board, which accused the administration of wanting a \u201cperpetual emergency\u201d to maintain and expand its powers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Biden Administration claims the declaration provides critical regulatory flexibility. But emergency-use authorizations for vaccines and treatments are governed by a separate statute. The Health and Human Services Department could also make permanent other regulation flexibility such as Medicare coverage for telehealth services,\u201d the editorial board <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-never-ending-covid-emergency-white-house-biden-administration-fda-vaccines-11657577450?mod=mhp\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Republicans have called on the Biden administration to end the emergency declaration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday we call on your administration to do what so many states and other countries already have: accept that COVID-19 is endemic, recognize that current heavy-handed government interventions are doing more harm than good, and immediately begin the process by which we unwind the PHE so our country can get back to normal,\u201d GOP members of Congress wrote in a letter in February.<\/p>\n<p>And in March, the Senate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/03\/03\/senate-votes-to-end-covid-19-emergency-declaration-biden-threatens-veto-00013946\">passed<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Biden administration announced Friday it has extended the COVID-19 public health emergency for three more months.
