Bennie Thompson said the committee will\u00a0 \u201crespond accordingly.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The U.S. Secret Service deleted text messages sent on Jan. 5 and 6 that were later sought by investigators, according to a letter the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General\u2019s (DHS IG) office sent to the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.<\/p>\n<p>The letter, which was also sent to the House and Senate Homeland Security Committees, stated that the messages were deleted after the DHS IG requested them, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/07\/14\/politics\/secret-service-text-messages-erased\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to CNN. The deletions occurred during the agency\u2019s device-replacement program, the letter said. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/07\/03\/obtained-text-message-cassidy-hutchinson-called-january-6-committee-bs-before-testifying\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED:\u00a0EXCLUSIVE: Text Messages Show Cassidy Hutchinson Referring To January 6 Committee As \u2018BS\u2019)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst, the Department notified us that many US Secret Service text messages from January 5 and 6, 2021, were erased as part of a device-replacement program. The USSS erased those text messages after OIG requested records of electronic communications from the USSS, as part of our evaluation of events at the Capitol on January 6,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/interactive\/uploads\/20220714-letter-to-house-select-committee.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">letter<\/a> from DHS IG Joseph Cuffari read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecond, DHS personnel have repeatedly told OIG inspectors that they were not permitted to provide records directly to OIG and that such records had to first undergo review by DHS attorneys. REUTERS\/Sarah Silbiger<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>But the Secret <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/07\/13\/biden-israel-assault-jerusalem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Service<\/a> claimed that the deletions happened during routine procedures, U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2022\/04\/07\/two-men-allegedly-pretended-to-be-federal-law-enforcement-buying-lavish-gifts-for-secret-service-officers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Secret<\/a> Service Chief of Communication Anthony Guglielmi told the Daily Caller News Foundation, adding that the Inspector General\u2019s claims that the agency wasn\u2019t cooperating with the probe are \u201cneither correct nor new.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo the contrary, DHS OIG has previously alleged that its employees were not granted appropriate and timely access to materials due to attorney review. DHS has repeatedly and publicly debunked this allegation, including in response to OIG\u2019s last two semi-annual reports to Congress. It is unclear why OIG is raising this issue again,\u201d Guglielmi told the DCNF.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe insinuation that the Secret Service maliciously deleted text messages following a request is false. In fact, the Secret Service has been fully cooperating with the Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General (DHS OIG) in every respect \u2013 whether it be interviews, documents, emails, or texts,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Guglielmi said the agency began resetting its cell phones to factory settings before the Inspector General\u2019s office began an inspection \u201cas part of a pre-planned, three-month system migration,\u201d where data was lost.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDHS OIG requested electronic communications for the first time on Feb. 26, 2021, after the migration was well under way. The Secret Service notified DHS OIG of the loss of certain phones\u2019 data, but confirmed to OIG that none of the texts it was seeking had been lost in the migration,\u201d Guglielmi said.<\/p>\n<p>The chairman of both the House Homeland Security Committee and the House Select Committee investigating Jan. 6, Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, said the committee will receive a briefing on the \u201cextraordinarily troubling destruction of records and respond accordingly,\u201d according to CNN.<\/p>\n<p>The chairmen of the Senate and House Homeland Security committees and the DHS Inspector General didn\u2019t respond to the DCNF\u2019s requests for comment.
