At least 47 percent said they would prefer a Republican-controlled Congress.<\/p>\n<p>Democrat pollsters at Hart Research tried to downplay this fact in their poll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/22086578-polling-memo\">memo<\/a>, which directed the AFT to blame Republicans for politicizing education. According to the pollsters, Republicans don\u2019t have a leg up because the GOP holds the trust of the public on education by only 1 percentage point (39 percent versus 38 percent), but given that Democrats have historically held great advantages over education issues, the poll reveals not so much a tie as a massive Republican comeback.<\/p>\n<p>AFT President Randi Weingarten used the pollsters\u2019 minimization as the basis for her speech at the union\u2019s 87th biennial convention, which was headlined by <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/administration\/3553394-jill-biden-to-headline-teachers-union-convention\/\">First Lady Jill Biden<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToo many politicians \u2026 stoke grievances rather than solve problems. They should be helping us help our kids and our communities, not making it harder with their culture wars and division,\u201d Weingarten <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aft.org\/press-release\/address-union-afts-weingarten-launches-what-kids-and-communities-need\">said<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Despite her long history of lobbying to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/12\/20\/randi-weingarten-wants-to-erase-her-school-closure-campaign-but-we-have-the-receipts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">keep schools shuttered<\/a> during the pandemic and her <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/07\/08\/teachers-union-president-claims-critical-race-theory-isnt-taught-after-her-organization-bragged-about-teaching-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">promotion of critical race theory<\/a>, Weingarten parroted Hart Research\u2019s language, insisting, \u201cInstead of banning books and censoring curriculums, Democrats are focused on investing in our schools.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe AFT is also urging parents and teachers to take action \u2014 by voting against politicians who are focused on things like book banning, culture wars, and injecting division into our classrooms, rather than investing in mental health resources, literacy programs, and efforts to reduce class sizes,\u201d Weingarten said. <\/p>\n<p>Corporate media also tried to spin the poll as a victory for teachers unions who want Democrats \u201cto fight back against Republicans\u2019 critical race theory attacks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArmed with new polling, one union president is launching a campaign to convince voters that Republicans are wrong on cultural issues,\u201d one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2022-election\/teachers-union-wants-democrats-fight-back-republican-crt-attacks-rcna38001\">NBC News article<\/a> claimed.  <\/p>\n<p>MSNBC\u2019s Kyle Griffin added that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kylegriffin1\/status\/1547705007000023040?s=20&#038;t=Oi2LO3V2OtHrVMmhsJEvIg\">the poll<\/a> is an opportunity for Democrats to \u201cstop hiding and start fighting Republicans on hot-button education issues like battles over teaching racial issues in school.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"953\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screen-Shot-2022-07-15-at-7.41.29-AM-953x1024-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-275846\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screen-Shot-2022-07-15-at-7.41.29-AM-953x1024-1.png 953w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screen-Shot-2022-07-15-at-7.41.29-AM-279x300-1.png 279w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screen-Shot-2022-07-15-at-7.41.29-AM-768x825-1.png 768w, https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screen-Shot-2022-07-15-at-7.41.29-AM.png 1206w\"><\/figure>\n<p>The pollsters\u2019 assertion that \u201cneither party enjoys a clear advantage on the issue of education today,\u201d however, ignores the rest of the survey\u2019s results, which suggest voters in swing states favor Republicans on key education issues.<\/p>\n<p>For example, 67 percent of respondees said schools should be \u201cmaking sure students have strong fundamental skills in reading, math, and science.\u201d Fifty-five percent said they should be \u201cteaching practical life skills, like how to balance a checkbook and deal with money.\u201d Another 47 percent said that \u201cdeveloping students\u2019 critical thinking and reasoning skills\u201d is a top priority.<\/p>\n<p>On their face, these might seem like normal things for voters to want in schools. But with the <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2021\/05\/04\/california-math-framework-woke-equity-calculus\/\">increasing left-wing push<\/a> to drop these kinds of requirements in the name of equity, poll results like these show parents want schools to stick to traditional education instead of investing time in inculcating an ideology. <\/p>\n<p>Only 24 percent of respondents said \u201cpreparing students to be comfortable and successful in diverse settings and workplaces\u201d fit into the top four most important things they think schools should be teaching. <\/p>\n<p>Even the pollsters\u2019 memo \u2014 which is largely focused on promoting \u201cstrong, confident Democratic communication on educating our kids and getting politics out of schools\u201d and attacking Republican states that have taken action on radical ideology in classrooms \u2014 admits that Republicans are winning voters over with the culture war: \u201c\u2026some Republican culture war attacks on schools have concerned voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Jordan Boyd is a staff writer at The Federalist and co-producer of The Federalist Radio Hour.
