Jim Banks, R-Ind., and Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, demanded Thursday that Gen. Mark Milley finally respond to allegations that he usurped presidential power over the military while he was President Donald Trump\u2019s principal military adviser. Bob Woodward and Robert Costa raised the allegations in their 2021 book \u201cPeril,\u201d and according to the lawmakers, Milley still has not confirmed nor denied them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to Bob Woodward\u2019s book \u2018Peril,\u2019 Gen. Mark Milley directed senior military officers not to follow the president\u2019s orders unless General Milley approved them first,\u201d Banks said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tkAYIgJTUZ4\">speech<\/a> on the House floor on Thursday. <\/p>\n<p>Grassley said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ggBmbz8yDpE\">speech<\/a> the same day that Milley\u2019s alleged actions \u201cstrike at the heart of our democracy \u2014 civilian control of the military,\u201d adding that, if the allegations are true, the actions would have been unlawful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe may have stepped out of his lane as the president\u2019s principal military adviser and into the statutory chain of command, where law doesn\u2019t allow him to go,\u201d Grassley said. \u201cBy law, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff has no command authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a Jan. 13 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grassley.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/grassley_paul_blackburn_to_gen.milleyreportedcontactwithchinesegeneral.pdf\">letter<\/a> to Milley, Grassley and Sens. Rand Paul and Marsha Blackburn, asked about another account contained in the book, in which Milley allegedly told Chinese general Li Zuocheng that if America were going to attack China, he would \u201ccall [Li] ahead of time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not going to be a surprise,\u201d Milley allegedly told Li.<\/p>\n<p>According to Grassley, Milley has yet to clarify whether the book\u2019s accounts are accurate, in spite of multiple requests from Grassley and other members of Congress. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am calling on Gen. Milley to set the record straight,\u201d Banks said. \u201cGen. Milley is accused of secretly seizing the president\u2019s military powers. That is the most serious crime.
