Wade<\/em>, the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongress is granted the authority to remove the Supreme Court\u2019s jurisdiction under Article III,\u201d Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said on Thursday. \u201cTo protect marriage equality, contraception, and more, we need to limit the power of the far-right Court that\u2019s already overturned Roe v. Wade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a letter sent to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Democrats call on the leaders to exercise Congress\u2019 constitutional powers under Article III to \u201cinclude language that removes the Supreme Court\u2019s appellate jurisdiction over such legislation,\u201d referring to Democratic plans for legislation that would \u201cprotect and enshrine abortion rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCongress can instead assign exclusive appellate jurisdiction to another federal court, such as the D.C. Circuit,\u201d the letter said.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">With our basic rights under threat from a rogue Supreme Court, Congress needs to exercise our legal authority to the fullest extent. That&#8217;s why today we called on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenSchumer?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SenSchumer<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpeakerPelosi?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SpeakerPelosi<\/a> to support stripping the Supreme Court\u2019s jurisdiction over abortion. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/9Rp6RkEqs8\">pic.twitter.com\/9Rp6RkEqs8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rep. Congress, as the branch of government that is closet to the people, has a duty to exercise its powers For the People.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pelosi and Schumer did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Daily Wire.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes after the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/united-states-supreme-court-overturns-roe-v-wade-leaves-abortion-restrictions-to-states\">recent pro-life victory<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<em>Dobbs vs. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization<\/em>, through which the Supreme Court overturned the monumental\u00a0<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>\u00a0case.<\/p>\n<p>The 6-3 decision in\u00a0<em>Dobbs\u00a0<\/em>followed the early May leak of a draft opinion indicating which way the justices would likely rule. That leak prompted protests across the nation, particularly in Washington, D.C., as well as dozens of attacks and vandalism of pro-life organizations, centers, and churches.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Samuel Alito wrote that\u00a0<em>Roe<\/em>\u00a0and a subsequent case,\u00a0<em>Planned Parenthood v. Casey<\/em>, which upheld\u00a0<em>Roe<\/em>, both must be overturned, and the right to allow, deny, or restrict the right to an abortion must reside with states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Roe<\/em> was egregiously wrong from the start. Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, <em>Roe<\/em> and <em>Casey<\/em> have enflamed debate and deepened division,\u201d Alito wrote in his majority opinion (strikingly similar to the earlier leaked draft). \u201cIt is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people\u2019s elected representatives.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democrats are calling for the Supreme Court to be stripped of its jurisdiction over abortion following the monumental overturn of Roe v.
