Kathy Hochul is trying to soften her opinion on qualified immunity, which shields police officers from civil liability, according to The New York Post.<\/p>\n<p>Hochul\u2019s office released a statement declaring that she would \u201creview\u201d legislation if passed by the New York State legislature, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/12\/hochul-waffles-on-qualified-immunity-for-new-york-cops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the NYP.<\/a> The statement stands in contrast to one Hochul made prior to the Democratic Primary in June.<\/p>\n<p>Previously in April, Hochul told the Liberal Democratic Club, a prominent progressive New York City club, that she \u201csupports efforts to increase accountability and transparency in law enforcement,\u201d according to their <a href=\"https:\/\/jimowles.org\/news\/candidate-answers-to-joldc-kathy-hochul-for-governor-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>. This lead many to believe she was in favor of taking away qualified immunity rights.<\/p>\n<p>The perceived shift in her opinion has caused many to question Hochul\u2019s true beliefs on the issue, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/12\/hochul-waffles-on-qualified-immunity-for-new-york-cops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the NYP<\/a>. Abolishing qualified immunity would allow police officers to be sued in civil court for alleged misconduct.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an election year, and she has to hedge her bets,\u201d Lt. Paul J. Rosenfeld\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIf qualified immunity is abolished there will be a mass exodus from law enforcement,\u201d Schettino told the DCNF. \u201cBecause who will want to risk their house, their finances, and their freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hochul\u2019s unclear position has caused many Republicans, including Republican New York Rep. and gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin, to illuminate the inconsistencies, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/12\/hochul-waffles-on-qualified-immunity-for-new-york-cops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NYP reported<\/a>. Zeldin accused Hochul of being weak and unable to lead the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are living in a twilight zone when our brave law enforcement heroes are treated like criminals and criminals are treated like heroes,\u201d NY GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy told the DCNF. \u201cGetting rid of qualified immunity would have a chilling effect on policing and officers\u2019 ability to do their jobs.
