Despite his promise, the National Institutes of Health has left untouched a 2019 neuroscience research grant that disbursed hundreds of thousands of dollars to the Chinese laboratory, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/award\/ASST_NON_RF1MH120020_7529\">according<\/a> to a federal expenditure database. The NIH earmarked most of the $4.3 million grant to U.C. The Trump-era NIH temporarily stopped funding a bat coronavirus research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaspending.gov\/award\/ASST_NON_R01AI110964_7529\">project<\/a> managed by New York-based environmental nonprofit EcoHealth because nearly $600,000 of the $3.7 million grant went toward the Chinese institute. The NIH later reinstated some of the funding after intense blowback from academics but imposed hefty conditions on its usage that EcoHealth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecohealthalliance.org\/2020\/08\/statement-on-the-latest-development-regarding-ecohealth-alliances-coronavirus-research-funding\">said<\/a> would &#8220;effectively block&#8221; it from finishing the bat coronavirus research project.<\/p>\n<p>U.C. Irvine also funneled some of its NIH grant money to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, but the California university appears to have been spared the funding restrictions imposed on EcoHealth: The database shows that the U.C. Irvine project remains fully funded to this day. The taxpayer-funded grant <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/?term=RF1+MH120020%2FMH%2FNIMH+NIH+HHS%2FUnited+States%5BGrant+Number%5D\">supported<\/a> the publication of two academic articles, including one that was published months after Trump pledged to suspend government funding for the Chinese lab.<\/p>\n<p>Justin Goodman, vice president of the White Coat Waste Project, a government watchdog group, said the U.S. government should suspend all ties to the Chinese laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Shipping U.S. tax dollars to a notorious CCP-run animal laboratory lab \u2026 is a recipe for disaster,&#8221; Goodman told the&nbsp;<em class>Washington Free Beacon.&nbsp;<\/em>&#8220;Taxpayers should not be forced to bankroll this reckless research, and it&#8217;s incredibly troubling that the Wuhan Institute still has authorization to keep getting our money.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The NIH previously received bipartisan criticism for its research ties to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which some U.S. officials say accidentally leaked the coronavirus to the general public. State Department reports&nbsp;<a class href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2020\/04\/14\/state-department-cables-warned-safety-issues-wuhan-lab-studying-bat-coronaviruses\/\">warned<\/a>&nbsp;that the Wuhan Institute of Virology had significant safety issues as far back as 2018. The World Health Organization&nbsp;<a class href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/virus-leak-wuhan-lab-unlikely-183346914.html\">said<\/a>&nbsp;it is &#8220;unlikely&#8221; that the virus leaked from the laboratory, but China has frequently&nbsp;<a class href=\"https:\/\/www.voanews.com\/covid-19-pandemic\/who-team-member-china-has-not-handed-over-vital-info-covid-19-outbreak\">stonewalled<\/a>&nbsp;WHO investigators from accessing information about the virus&#8217;s origins.<\/p>\n<p>U.C. Irvine received the NIH grant money to conduct a three-year research project on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/som.uci.edu\/news_releases\/Xu-awarded-BRAIN-initiative-grant-for-brain-mapping-tool.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/som.uci.edu\/news_releases\/Xu-awarded-BRAIN-initiative-grant-for-brain-mapping-tool.asp&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1613851777851000&amp;usg=AFQjCNGZHbQF1Y6v0hN1x0oA8pxVrBv5TA\">using<\/a>&nbsp;genetically engineered herpesviruses to map the human brain. The grant listed Prof. Min-Hua Luo, a group leader at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, as one of the &#8220;multiple principal investigators&#8221; for the project and noted that she and her colleagues at the Wuhan Institute of Virology will play a significant role in the research project. &#8220;Prof. Luo and other key investigators in her group at Wuhan Institute of Virology, Chinese Academy of Sciences will collaborate with [U.C. Irvine Prof.] Xiangmin Xu and other [multiple principal investigators] in the U.S.,&#8221; the research grant read.<\/p>\n<p>Luo was listed as a coauthor in both of the academic articles published with the support&nbsp;of the NIH grant.<\/p>\n<p>Goodman said the NIH&#8217;s opaque funding practices could be concealing even more examples of taxpayer money going toward the Chinese laboratory.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These grants \u2026 are very secretive and not transparent,&#8221; Goodman said. &#8220;Often it&#8217;s impossible to connect the dots between foreign and U.S.-based institutions using NIH&#8217;s database.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>U.C.
