But since then, some 11 variants and subvariants have come along. The latest, known as BA.5, now accounts for 65% of all new cases, with BA.4 causing more than 15% of cases, the CDC <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#variant-proportions\">said<\/a> Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>And that has led to people getting the virus more than once. As of June 8,\u00a0more than 1.6 million reinfections have occurred across 24 states, a recent ABC News <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/experts-reveal-reinfection-covid-spread-omicron-subvariant-ba5\/story?id=86598514\">analysis<\/a> showed. But experts say the data is lacking and the number of reinfections is likely much higher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are not the real numbers because many people are not reporting cases,\u201d Dr. Ali Mokdad, an epidemiologist with the University of Washington\u2019s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation in Seattle, told ABC News.<\/p>\n<p>New studies are also showing that antibodies from vaccines \u2014 and even those created by a previous infection \u2014 don\u2019t offer much protection against the latest subvariant BA.5.<\/p>\n<p>While there have been conflicting reports, with some scientists saying BA.5 is not as bad as other strains while others say it\u2019s worse, what\u2019s clear is that even mild reinfections can be dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.researchsquare.com\/files\/rs-1749502\/v1\/499445df-ebaf-4ab3-b30f-3028dff81fca.pdf?c=1655499468\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> posted online in June that had not yet been peer-reviewed found that reinfection adds \u201cnon-trivial risks,\u201d including death, hospitalization, and other possible side effects after the infection.<\/p>\n<p>Study co-author Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, an assistant professor at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, explained what that means to Time magazine. He said reinfection brings new risks: \u201cIf your risk was X,\u201d after the first time someone contracts the virus, \u201cit\u2019s X plus Y\u201d for the second infection.<\/p>\n<p>The pharmaceutical company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/moderna\">Moderna<\/a> on Monday announced that the initial tests of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/covid-19\">COVID<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/covid-19-vaccine\">booster<\/a> specifically targeting BA.4 and BA.5 show it is more effective than previous shots.<\/p>\n<p>And the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) this week <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/fda-panel-recommends-new-covid-19-shots-to-target-omicron-variant\">recommended<\/a> producing new COVID vaccines to target the Omicron variant.\u00a0By a 19-2 vote, the Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee approved a plan to have new vaccines ready by early October.<\/p>\n<p><em>Joseph Curl has covered politics for 35 years, including 12 years as White House correspondent for a national newspaper.
