{"id":1553439,"date":"2022-07-14T06:30:17","date_gmt":"2022-07-14T10:30:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/?p=1553439"},"modified":"2022-07-14T07:04:25","modified_gmt":"2022-07-14T11:04:25","slug":"customer-visits-to-starbucks-dunkin-drop-amid-record-high-inflation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/customer-visits-to-starbucks-dunkin-drop-amid-record-high-inflation\/","title":{"rendered":"Customer Visits to Starbucks, Dunkin\u2019 Drop Amid Record-high Inflation"},"content":{"rendered":"<aside class=\"mashsb-container mashsb-main mashsb-stretched\"><div class=\"mashsb-box\"><div class=\"mashsb-count mash-medium\" style=\"float:left\"><div class=\"counts mashsbcount\">18<\/div><span class=\"mashsb-sharetext\">SHARES<\/span><\/div><div class=\"mashsb-buttons\"><a class=\"mashicon-facebook mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.conservativenewsdaily.net%2Fbreaking-news%2Fcustomer-visits-to-starbucks-dunkin-drop-amid-record-high-inflation%2F\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Facebook<\/span><\/a><a class=\"mashicon-twitter mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?text=&amp;url=https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/?p=1553439&amp;via=ConservNewsDly\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Twitter<\/span><\/a><a class=\"mashicon-subscribe mash-medium mash-nomargin mashsb-noshadow\" href=\"#\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span class=\"icon\"><\/span><span class=\"text\">Subscribe<\/span><\/a><div class=\"onoffswitch2 mash-medium mashsb-noshadow\" style=\"display:none\"><\/div><\/div>\n            <\/div>\n                <div style=\"clear:both\"><\/div><\/aside>\n            <!-- Share buttons by mashshare.net - Version: 4.0.47--><p>As inflation reaches <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/june-cpi-preview-inflation-likely-surged-to-new-40-year-high-last-month-215233961.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:new record-highs,;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">new record-highs,<\/a> more Americans are ditching their daily cup of joe \u2014 at least at big coffee chains like Dunkin&#8217; and Starbucks (<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/SBUX?p=SBUX&#038;.tsrc=fin-srch\" data-ylk=\"slk:SBUX\" class=\"link\">SBUX<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>According to new data from foot traffic analytics platform Placer.ai, coffee visits dropped below quick service restaurants for the first time all year during the month of June due to &#8220;a combination of inflation, high gas prices, and the rise in COVID cases,&#8221; the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.placer.ai\/blog\/coffee-visits-down-as-inflation-curbs-discretionary-spending%ef%bf%bc\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:report\" class=\"link\">report<\/a> noted.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past two years \u2014 as the pandemic hammered fast food and dine-in restaurants \u2014 coffee consistently kept up its customer visits, outpacing quick-service chains every month between July 2020 and May 2022 when comparing foot traffic to a January 2020 baseline.<\/p>\n<p>This despite rising prices as Starbucks has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/starbucks-prices-inflation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:hiked the costs of its items\" class=\"link\">hiked the costs of its items <\/a>three times since October while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mashed.com\/728989\/dunkin-patrons-arent-happy-about-their-increasing-prices\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:recent reports\" class=\"link\">recent reports<\/a> say Dunkin&#8217; has increased its prices by 8%.<\/p>\n<p>But June delivered an unfortunate blow to the coffee giants&#8217; pricing power, with Starbucks and Dunkin\u2019 seeing a year-over-year drop in monthly visits of 7.8% and 4.1%, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Year-over-three-year comparisons show that Dunkin\u2019 maintained its June 2019 visit levels while Starbucks foot traffic fell 6.6%, Placer.ai said.<\/p>\n<p>The report added that Dunkin&#8217;s pre-pandemic lead on Starbucks could be due to the chain&#8217;s more affordable pricing, especially amid these inflationary times; however, both chains&#8217; respective visit gaps are relatively small.<\/p>\n<p>This could suggest that customers are adjusting their behaviors to match the current economic downtown, but that long-term foot traffic will eventually bounce back.<\/p>\n<p>Dutch Bros. Coffee (<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/BROS\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:BROS\" class=\"link\">BROS<\/a>) remains the exception to its competitors&#8217; foot-traffic slip with visits up 22.8% year-over-year in June (and up 178.2% compared to 2019), as the brand continues its rapid growth.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Food prices soar amid record-high inflation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/inflation-food-prices-soar-in-june-as-white-house-says-prices-are-too-high-152810203.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Soaring food prices;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">Soaring food prices<\/a> contributed significantly to last month&#8217;s record-high inflation print of 9.1%.<\/p>\n<p>The category saw increases of 1% over the month and 10.4% annually, the biggest 12-month increase since the period ending February 1981.<\/p>\n<p>Within food, grocery store prices rose 1% in June and 12.2% on a year-over-year basis with the prices of cereal, bread, and chicken seeing increases of 2.5%, 1.6% and 1.5%, respectively, compared to the month of May.<\/p>\n<p>On an annual basis, the prices of those items were up a whopping 14.2%, 10.8% and 17.3%, respectively, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/cpi.t02.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:according to BLS data.\" class=\"link\">according to BLS data.<\/a><\/p>\n<figure class=\"caas-figure\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"caas-img-container caas-img-loader noheight\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Inflation: Grocery prices rose 1% last month and 12.2% on a year-over-year basis\" src=\"https:\/\/cndimages.nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/14070424\/495f9cf0-0725-11ec-b96e-4f94aadd8ffb\" class=\"caas-img\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><figcaption class=\"caption-collapse\">Inflation: Grocery prices rose 1% last month and 12.2% on a year-over-year basis<\/figcaption><\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>White House Director of the National Economic Council Brian Deese told Yahoo Finance in a new interview that &#8220;the bottom line is prices are too high when [consumers] are buying groceries or buying gas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He added that President Biden is focused on &#8220;taking action&#8221; to lower prices for consumers across the board, explaining that the White House is working on legislation to lower the cost of prescription drugs, as well as providing clean energy incentives to decrease the overall costs of utility bills.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s going to provide relief to some families that are having to pay too much,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Still, Deese pointed out some positives in the June report, citing the price declines of certain meats with bacon falling for the second straight month in a row (down 1.9%.) Beef and veal also saw month-over-month declines of 2.3%.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Overall, food at home \u2014 the food that you buy in a grocery store \u2014 saw some moderation from the increase from last month,&#8221; the director noted, although he admitted that &#8220;at the end of the day, what we should be doing is acting to bring down costs for consumers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Alexandra is a Senior Entertainment and Food Reporter at Yahoo Finance.
