National Guard to Mayor\u00a0Muriel Bowser, as opposed to the president, who currently oversees the force in\u00a0Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>In other states across the United States, governors are in charge of their respective national guards.<\/p>\n<p>Rep.\u00a0Jared Golden (D-Maine)\u00a0joined Republicans in opposing the\u00a0amendment to the\u00a0NDAA, while Rep.\u00a0Fred Upton (R-Mich.)\u00a0supported the measure.<\/p>\n<p>Two Republicans and one Democrat did not vote.\u00a0House lawmakers are expected to pass the full NDAA this week.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/norton.house.gov\/media-center\/press-releases\/norton-maloney-brown-amendment-to-give-dc-mayor-control-over-dc-national\">statement<\/a> on Wednesday Reps. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), Anthony Brown (D-Md.), and\u00a0Eleanor Holmes Norton, a Democrat who represents the District of Columbia, cited the Jan. 6 Capitol breach as a reason for the\u00a0amendment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn January 6, 2021, as our democracy was under attack, D.C.\u2019s mayor was unable to call out the D.C. National Guard, wasting hours and potentially costing lives,\u201d the members said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the authority to control the D.C. National Guard were to be given to D.C.\u2019s mayor, as governors of the states and territories control their National Guards, it would be the biggest expansion of home rule for the District since the 1970s. The January 6th attack on the Capitol demonstrated why this authority belongs in the hands of D.C.\u2019s mayor and not the president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \u2018Completely Unacceptable\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0Rep.
