Version: 4.0.47--><p>Two days before his 19th birthday last week, Logan Schneider may have saved a helicopter pilot\u2019s life in the middle of Washington when it crashed into a set of power lines above the teenager and landed on top of his tractor.<\/p>\n<p>Schneider had just finished working on his family\u2019s cherry orchard in Orondo, Washington, when he heard a loud crash above him and saw a Hiller UH-12E.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had noise-canceling headphones on, and all of a sudden, I just hear something so loud above me,\u201d Schneider told\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncwlife.com\/news\/victim-of-orondo-helicopter-crash-turns-rescuer\/article_d8a1fdf4-fe41-11ec-96e1-97e11278557c.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NCWLIFE<\/a>. \u201cAnd I look up, and I see the helicopter hit the power line, and then it comes crashing down, and it hit me on the tractor and pinned me against the steering wheel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schneider told\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.krem.com\/article\/news\/local\/helicopter-falls-tractor-orondo\/281-375b50c1-b64d-4cfe-9e3b-844f806468fe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KREM2<\/a>\u00a0that the nose of the helicopter wedged him against the steering wheel.<\/p>\n<p>Just after he escaped the trap, he saw the pilot, Cori Johnson, 39, from Idaho, screaming while hanging upside down in his harness as the helicopter burned in flames.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to go in through the fire, reach my arms through and unclip him,\u201d Schneider told the\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/13\/us\/helicopter-crash-washington-state.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He said he \u201creally wasn\u2019t thinking\u201d at the moment when he rescued Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was just doing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Orondo Fire authorities responded to the crash on July 7 around 9:00 a.m and found the helicopter wreckage and the tractor on fire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirefighters initial efforts were hindered by difficult access and high voltage power lines,\u201d authorities\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=pfbid0upehcYkZNukbLienbNeeLwYjdSTA4VoSz2hZqp5vKB8MCRUze4DJd7dxRrpNMRzRl&#038;id=207235355980728\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cOnce the power lines were de-energized firefighters extinguished the fire on both the tractor and helicopter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Authorities reported the initial investigation showed the helicopter struck high voltage power lines then swiftly moved into the cherry orchard.<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times reported the F.A.A. said out of the 12,000 civilian helicopters flown last year, 114 crashes occurred.<\/p>\n<p>David Schneider, Logan\u2019s father, told the New York Times he received a call about the crash while at work about 20 minutes away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still in awe,\u201d David Schneider said. \u201cI still get goosebumps thinking of what could have happened and trying not to dwell on what could have happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both males only sustained minor injuries and were transported to Central Washington Hospital for treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Schneider, who sustained minor, second-degree burns on his arms and muscle damage in his back, described the odds of that happening as one in a million.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like I always have someone watching over me, God watching over me, protecting me,\u201d Schneider told\u00a0<a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.krem.com\/article\/news\/local\/helicopter-falls-tractor-orondo\/281-375b50c1-b64d-4cfe-9e3b-844f806468fe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">KREM2<\/a>. \u201cAnd you never know when it could be your last moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Schneider told reporters despite the accident, he plans on fulfilling his goal of enrolling in an aviation program to learn how to fly commercial airliners.<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps the strangest part about Schneider and Johnson crashing into each other \u2014 they both share the same July 8 birthday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just thought it was so bizarre,\u201d Schneider said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two days before his 19th birthday last week, Logan Schneider may have saved a helicopter pilot\u2019s life in the middle of Washington when it crashed into a set of power lines above the teenager and landed on top of his tractor.
