The draft would need approval before qualifying for ballot placement in the fall. The measure was brought by board Chair Holly Mitchell and Supervisor Hilda Solis, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lamag.com\/article\/county-supervisors-to-consider-proposal-enabling-sheriff-villanuevas-removal\/\">Los Angeles Magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cWe can\u2019t just sit back and watch the destruction of a wayward sheriff,\u201d Solis, who co-wrote the motion, said, per the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/los-angeles-remove-sheriff\">Washington Examiner<\/a>. \u201cIf the sheriff is not able to follow the law \u2026 and engages in misconduct, the board needs stronger mechanisms to check this harmful behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">While Villanueva is a moderate Democrat, he has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/los-angeles-remove-sheriff\">challenged<\/a> the Board over its position on \u201cdefund the police,\u201d its part in allowing the homelessness population to skyrocket, as well as its approval of social welfare initiatives for criminals instead of prison, per the Examiner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The Daily Wire reached out for comment and was <a href=\"https:\/\/local.nixle.com\/alert\/9532875\/\">directed<\/a> to Sheriff Villanueva\u2019s public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo?fbid=413131520854970&#038;set=pcb.413132717521517\">response<\/a> to the Board of Supervisors, in which he called the action an \u201cunprecedented motion\u201d that \u201cwould allow corrupt Board members to intimidate sheriffs from carrying out their official duties to investigate crime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">He pointed out that the measure was built upon an earlier motion first started by former Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, who is facing a trial this fall and has \u201cbeen indicted on 20 counts of public corruption for alleged criminal acts committed while serving as the chair\u201d of the Board.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Villanueva claimed that the proposal would likely be found to be unconstitutional in court. \u201cThe fact the authors of this motion never sought an opinion from County Counsel or constitutional law expert, regarding its constitutionality, speaks volumes as to the intent,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The statement pointed out that there are four methods of removing a Sheriff from office including elections, recall elections, creating a civil grand jury, or \u201cusing the authority already vested in the state attorney general,\u201d noting that the Board \u201cconveniently\u201d forgot to state the fourth option. He added that the measure \u201cis a recipe for public corruption, particularly when \u2018cause\u2019 remains so broad and undefined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Villanueva did not hold back on calling out the Board of Supervisors in their attempt to gain power to dismiss him, stating \u201c[t]his Board is attempting to cheat the system and create a \u2018fast track\u2019 pathway to remove a duly elected sheriff, one which circumvents the law and the foundational principles of due process enshrined in the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">\u201cYou are not, \u2018putting it in the hands of the voters.\u2019 You are putting it in the hands of political activists who wrote the basis for this motion and the same political activists whose mission is to abolish law enforcement and redirect the public safety budget to their own 501(c)3 non-governmental organizations,\u201d he added, in an apparent reference to \u201cdefund the police\u201d initiatives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Villanueva also pointed out that the board has already publicly stated it supports his opponent, leading Villanueva to noted that \u201cit is highly unethical for you to put this motion forward\u201d in light of that fact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The Republican National Committee came out with a statement last week, saying the measure is \u201canother prime example of how Democrats like to change the rules when they don\u2019t get their way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only is Sheriff Villanueva an elected official, he\u2019s one of the few who has been willing to stand up to the board for reducing law enforcement funding and effectively endangering the lives of Angelenos,\u201d per the RNC, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/la-county-supervisors-approve-proposal-give-themselves-power-remove-sheriff-alex-villanueva?intcmp=tw_fnc\">Fox News<\/a> and LA Mag. \u201c\u2026 This decision from the L.A.
