Bush in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>Danchenko, who has pleaded not guilty, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/mkt_morningbrief\/durham-investigators-arrest-steele-dossier-source-igor-dachenko-spokesman_4086220.html\">charged with lying<\/a> to the FBI. Durham alleges that he made five false statements to the FBI in connection to\u00a0information he provided to former UK spy Christopher Steele, who was hired by an opposition research company on behalf of a law firm working for Hillary Clinton\u2019s campaign in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>According to Durham\u2019s indictment, Danchenko\u2019s alleged fabrications \u201cwere material to the FBI because \u2026 the FBI\u2019s investigation of the Trump Campaign relied\u201d on the dossier to obtain secretive warrants to spy on former Trump campaign aide Carter Page.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe FBI ultimately devoted substantial resources attempting to investigate and corroborate the allegations contained in\u201d the dossier, including whether Danchenko\u2019s sub-sources were reliable, the indictment states. The dossier and information provided by Danchenko \u201cplayed a role in the FBI\u2019s investigative decisions and in sworn representations that the FBI made to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court throughout the relevant time period,\u201d according to last year\u2019s complaint.<\/p>\n<p>Steele Dossier<\/p>\n<p>Memos compiled by Steele\u2014collectively known as the Steele dossier\u2014claimed Trump colluded with Russian officials to help him defeat Clinton in 2016. Trump has categorically denied the allegations, saying they\u2019re part of a longstanding Democrat-backed narrative designed to discredit him.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4101537\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2021\/11\/12\/danchenko-1200x800.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"lazy size-medium wp-image-4101537 ll-init ll-loadstarted ll-loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2021\/11\/12\/danchenko-600x400.jpg\" alt=\"Epoch Times Photo\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" data-src=\"https:\/\/img.theepochtimes.com\/assets\/uploads\/2021\/11\/12\/danchenko-600x400.jpg\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Igor Danchenk is seen at a federal courthouse in Alexandria, Va., on Nov. 10, 2021. (Chip Somodevilla\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And a number of allegations contained within the dossier turned out to be false, sparking inspector general, criminal, and congressional investigations.<\/p>\n<p>Durham said that Danchenko made up a conversation that he claimed was the source of some of the more sordid claims contained within the dossier. It also alleged that Russian intelligence officials were blackmailing Trump, which the former president has denied.<\/p>\n<p>The indictment suggests that the claim came from a Democratic public relations executive, Charles Dolan Jr., who toured a suite in Moscow in 2016 that was once used by Trump. But Dolan and another witness told investigators that there was no mention of inappropriate behavior in the suite, according to the indictment, casting further doubt on Steele\u2019s claims.<\/p>\n<p>In a 2019 report released by Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz,\u00a0Danchenko told the FBI that he obtained his information via\u00a0word of mouth and hearsay\u201d from sources in Russia. But some of his sources\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/alleged-steele-dossier-sources-deny-involvement-new-court-filing-shows_3869667.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">denied<\/a>\u00a0that they provided him with information that was contained within the Steele dossier, according to court filings submitted in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Danchenko is the third person to be charged by Durham\u2019s team. The second, former Democrat lawyer Michael Sussmann, was found not guilty of lying to the FBI several weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>As he appeared at the federal court in\u00a0Alexandria last year, Danchenko\u2019s former lawyer\u00a0Mark Schamel issued a statement saying that his client\u2019s work as a researcher is\u00a0\u201cabove reproach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the past five years,\u201d he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/legal-issues\/steele-dossier-danchenko-pleads-not-guilty\/2021\/11\/10\/f1cf661e-41b7-11ec-9ea7-3eb2406a2e24_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cthose with an agenda have sought to expose Mr. Danchenko\u2019s identity and tarnish his reputation while undermining U.S. National Security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Epoch Times has contacted one of Danchenko\u2019s lawyers, Stuart Sears, for comment.<\/p>\n<div class=\"author_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"one_author_block round\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Special counsel John Durham asked a federal court to send out 30 subpoenas for testimony in the pending trial against research analyst\u00a0Igor Danchenko, who was the alleged main source for the discredited \u201cSteele dossier\u201d that targeted former President Donald Trump.
