Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) explained his reasoning for changing his mind on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-abortion\">abortion<\/a> after once calling for Roe v. Wade to be overturned.<\/p>\n<p>Tuesday\u2019s hearing focused on the potential legal repercussions of the Supreme Court\u2019s (SCOTUS) decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization, in which SCOTUS decided to overturn the abortion standard defined by Roe v. Wade.<\/p>\n<p>Under that standard, states were prohibited from restricting abortion before the so-called \u201cviability line\u201d\u2014a term that describes an infant\u2019s ability to live outside of his or her mother\u2019s womb. However, even top biologists in favor of abortion have long disagreed on how to define the \u201cviability line.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the SCOTUS decision in Dobbs v. Jackson\u2019s Women\u2019s Health Organization, the power to regulate abortion has been returned to the states\u2014a decision that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-democrats\">Democrats<\/a> have said will have dire consequences for women.<\/p>\n<p>During the hearing, Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) noted that Durbin, like many other Democrats, changed his mind on abortion over the past few decades.<\/p>\n<p>To demonstrate Durbin\u2019s change of heart, Lee submitted to the record a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PhilipWegmann\/status\/1546880637935788034\/photo\/1\">copy of a letter that Durbin wrote in 1989<\/a> while still a member of the House of Representatives expressing his opposition to the practice and calling for the overturning of Roe v. Wade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe we should end abortion on demand and at\u00a0every opportunity I\u00a0have translated this belief into votes in the House of Representatives,\u201d Durbin wrote in that letter. \u201cI am\u00a0opposed to the use of federal funds to pay for elective abortions, and will\u00a0continue to support amendments to prohibit the funding of elective abortions\u00a0for federal employees and Medicaid recipients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso,\u201d Durbin added, \u201cI continue to believe the Supreme Court\u2019s decision in Roe v.\u00a0Wade should be reversed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenatorDurbin\/status\/1546952614818062338\">In a recent statement<\/a> indicative of his change of<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During a heated July 12 exchange in the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen.
