House members earn an annual <a href=\"https:\/\/pressgallery.house.gov\/member-data\/salaries\">salary<\/a> of $174,000.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez\">Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/a> (D-NY) owes up to $50,000, according to the financial disclosures, and said at the end of last year that she owes $17,000. \u201cI\u2019m 32 years old now,\u201d the lawmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/pay-your-own-darn-bills-aoc-who-makes-174000-per-year-blasted-for-complaining-about-17k-in-student-loans\">remarked<\/a>. \u201cI have over $17,000 in student loan debt, and I didn\u2019t go to graduate school because I knew that getting another degree would drown me in debt that I would never be able to surpass. This is unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, according to the disclosures, Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/rashida-tlaib\">Rashida Tlaib<\/a> (D-MI) owes up to $100,000 and said last year that she owes $70,000. \u201cI worked full time, Monday through Friday, and took weekend classes to get my law degree,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thehill\/status\/1467570719487926282?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1467570719487926282%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailywire.com%2Fnews%2Fpay-your-own-darn-bills-aoc-who-makes-174000-per-year-blasted-for-complaining-about-17k-in-student-loans\">said<\/a> last year. \u201cAnd still, close to $200,000 in debt. And I still owe over $70,000 and most of it was interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The spouse of Rep. Grace Meng (D-NY) owes up to $250,000, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ny1.com\/nyc\/all-boroughs\/politics\/2022\/03\/08\/these-five-members-of-congress-from-ny-still-have-student-debt\">disclosures<\/a> from last year. The lawmaker <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepGraceMeng\/status\/1511815418108858374\">praised<\/a> President Joe Biden in April for \u201cextending the student loan moratorium\u201d first established by President Donald Trump in early 2020, yet affirmed that the nation must cancel student debt altogether \u201cin order for our country to thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A similar analysis from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/members-of-congress-with-student-loan-debt-2022-3\">Business Insider<\/a> released earlier this year found that 44 members of Congress listed student debt on their financial disclosures \u2014 reflecting 8% of the combined 535 members of the Senate and House of Representatives. Just over half of the legislators had reported their own student loans, while the rest had reported a spouse\u2019s debt or an obligation co-signed on behalf of a child.<\/p>\n<p>Democratic officials have been debating over the past several months about the possibility of issuing widespread student debt cancellation. The Biden administration is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/us-policy\/2022\/05\/27\/biden-student-debt-borrower\/\">reportedly<\/a> considering a plan to cancel $10,000 in loans per borrower after making a <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@JoeBiden\/joe-biden-outlines-new-steps-to-ease-economic-burden-on-working-people-e3e121037322\">similar promise<\/a> on the campaign trail, while Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/this-cpac-footage-is-nuts-progressives-blast-pelosi-for-saying-student-debt-forgiveness-is-a-bad-idea\">argued<\/a> that \u201call President Biden has to do is flick his pen\u201d and erase up to $50,000 per borrower.<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks ago, Schumer also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/schumer-slams-fat-cats-who-dont-want-to-cancel-student-loans\">denounced<\/a> the notion that student loans are \u201cnot a problem that concerns the wealthy or the Ivy League,\u201d arguing that \u201call of these fat cats, and people who never want to see help for working people and poor people come up with these myths\u201d \u2014 even though almost one-third of student debt is owed by the wealthiest 20% of households and 8% is owned by the bottom 20%, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/research\/student-loan-forgiveness-is-regressive-whether-measured-by-income-education-or-wealth\/\">Brookings Institution<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/this-cpac-footage-is-nuts-progressives-blast-pelosi-for-saying-student-debt-forgiveness-is-a-bad-idea\">rejected<\/a> the idea that Biden can single-handedly cancel student debt \u2014 or that student debt cancellation is prudent in the first place. \u201cSuppose,\u201d she said, \u201cyour child at this time does not want to go to college, but you\u2019re paying taxes to forgive someone else\u2019s obligation.
