John Cornyn (R-Texas), the top Republican negotiator for the Senate\u2019s newly unveiled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-gun-control\">gun control<\/a> bill, has said he will not take part in a new round of gun control talks concerning proposals aimed at limiting access to\u00a0certain rifles or expanding background checks.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmaker was asked by reporters on July 12 whether\u00a0Republicans would negotiate with Democrats on proposals that would\u00a0limit\u00a0the availability of\u00a0some sporting rifles along with other gun control reforms, to which Cornyn simply replied, \u201cNo, we\u2019re done,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/3555931-cornyn-shuts-door-on-additional-gun-control-talks\/\">The Hill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The GOP lawmaker\u2019s comments came shortly after President Joe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-biden\">Biden<\/a> on July 11\u00a0urged Congress to pass laws implementing a new ban on civilian sporting rifles such as the AR-15, referring to them as \u201cassault weapons,\u201d following the mass shootings in Uvalde, Texas, and Highland Park, Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re living in a country awash in weapons of war,\u201d Biden said at\u00a0the White House, seemingly in reference to civilian sporting rifles. \u201cWhat is the rationale for these weapons outside war zones?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am determined to ban these weapons again and high-capacity magazines that hold 30 rounds and let mass shooters fire hundreds of bullets in a matter of minutes,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m not going to stop until we do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \u2018Gun Control Bill\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>Biden also touted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Bipartisan-Safer-Communities-Act-SAP-1.pdf\">Safer Communities Act<\/a> passed in June which\u00a0includes federal funding to enforce red flag laws and enhances\u00a0background checks for gun buyers between the ages of 18 and 21.<\/p>\n<p>It also makes\u00a0obtaining guns through\u00a0so-called \u201cstraw purchases\u201d\u2014in which an individual agrees to buy a firearm for someone else who is banned from possessing one\u2014a federal offense and prohibits\u00a0individuals from obtaining or possessing a firearm for at least five years if they\u2019ve been convicted of a misdemeanor crime or domestic violence in a relationship.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0National Rifle Association has taken aim at the act, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NRA\/status\/1540676952650002432?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">stating<\/a> on Twitter that it<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sen.
