Josh Hawley made waves in the media when he asked a Democratic witness who repeatedly used the phrase \u201cpeople with the capacity for pregnancy\u201d whether she meant \u201cwomen.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>UC Berkeley law professor Khiara Bridges responded by calling Hawley\u2019s line of questioning \u201ctransphobic\u201d and said it incited violence against people who identifiy as transgender. But despite the media attention, this wasn\u2019t the most eye-opening moment in the hearing. In fact, even more revealing than the questions the witnesses did answer were the ones they didn\u2019t, which also happened to be the ones Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn asked right after CBS cut off its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aI_UNQhpHmg\">online coverage<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>When Cornyn asked Bridges whether she thought a baby delivered alive had value, she paused and answered \u201cyes.\u201d He then asked the same question about a baby that is not yet born. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that a person with the capacity for pregnancy has value,\u201d Bridges said. \u201cThey have intelligence, they have agency, they have dignity\u2014\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, I\u2019m talking about the baby,\u201d Cornyn said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I\u2019m talking about the person with the capacity for pregnancy,\u201d Bridges replied. <\/p>\n<p>When Cornyn said she wasn\u2019t answering his question, she replied, \u201cI\u2019m answering a more interesting question to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cornyn repeated his question, and Bridges essentially repeated her answer, refusing to say whether she thought a baby has value in the womb. <\/p>\n<p>Michigan Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, another Democrat witness, similarly dodged Cornyn\u2019s question about whether she supported abortion for any reason at any point during pregnancy. Stratton said \u2014 and then sternly repeated \u2014 that she thinks everyone has the right to make decisions about \u201cwhat\u2019s best for their life, their body, and their future\u201d but refused to answer the question. <\/p>\n<p>The abortion radicalism on display from the Democrats\u2019 witnesses is out of touch with what most Americans believe. One of the Republican witnesses, Alliance Defending Freedom\u2019s Chief Counsel Denise Harle, told the committee that \u201cnearly 90 percent of Americans oppose abortion in the third trimester, let alone until birth.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>A recent Harvard-Harris <a href=\"https:\/\/harvardharrispoll.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/HHP_June2022_KeyResults.pdf\">poll<\/a> supports Harle\u2019s claim, showing that only 10 percent of voters support abortion through all nine months of pregnancy. Another new <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/07\/08\/look-how-even-democrat-opinion-shifts-on-abortion-laws-when-polls-stop-using-leftist-framing\/\">poll<\/a> illuminates how, although Democrats and the media habitually tout <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> as majority-supported, Americans drop their support when they learn what that decision entailed. <\/p>\n<p>When respondents learned that <em>Roe<\/em> allowed for late-term abortions when babies in utero can feel pain, 56 percent said they opposed the 1973 decision, and only 28 percent supported it. Furthermore, after answering questions about the humanity of unborn babies, a majority (55 percent) of respondents said abortions should be banned between 0 and 6 weeks of pregnancy.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n<p>\n  Olivia Hajicek is an intern at The Federalist and a junior at Hillsdale College studying history and journalism.
