Surveillance videos <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/09\/nyc-bodega-clerk-jose-alba-tried-to-avoid-confrontation-that-led-to-his-arrest-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">show<\/a> the unnamed girlfriend of Austin Simon, the man Alba killed who had a history of felony arrests and was out on parole, becoming upset with Alba when her card was declined and threatening to \u201cbring my n\u2013 down here and he gonna f-ck you up.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/05\/video-shows-nyc-bodega-worker-allegedly-stabbing-man-to-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">video<\/a> shows Simon walking behind the counter to Alba, shoving him, and getting in his face before Alba stood up and appeared to try to walk past Simon, at which point the two wrestled until Alba eventually stabbed the other man. \u201cI don\u2019t want a problem,\u201d Alba <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/10\/video-shows-how-nyc-bodega-worker-jose-alba-may-have-been-stabbed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> Simon when he walked in, according to the New York Post. Further footage <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/10\/video-shows-how-nyc-bodega-worker-jose-alba-may-have-been-stabbed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">appears<\/a> to show the girlfriend pulling out a knife of her own and slashing Alba, although she has not been charged.<\/p>\n<p>After outrage over Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg\u2019s decision to charge Alba, who has no prior criminal record, with murder, and his pursuit of such a high bail while Alba languished at Rikers, the bail amount was reduced \u2014 but the charges have so far not been dropped. In the meantime, GoFundMe <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/07\/07\/gofundme-deletes-page-for-nyc-bodega-clerk-who-fatally-stabbed-attacker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deleted<\/a> a fundraising page for Alba\u2019s defense, in a move that has become common for the platform when its leaders don\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/02\/08\/18-fundraisers-aiding-riots-crime-abortion-and-genital-mutilation-that-gofundme-didnt-shut-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">agree<\/a> with a cause.<\/p>\n<p>A fearless citizen with the will and means to defend himself is a threat to left-wing bureaucrats who want to boss him around \u2014 like they did when they knocked on doors sniffing out \u201cunauthorized\u201d religious services and gatherings during Covid lockdowns, or when they allowed lawless riots to hold cities hostage during the summer of 2020. Bragg\u2019s decision to crack down on what appears to at least <em>potentially<\/em> be a strong case of self-defense may not have been an intentional ploy to criminalize self-protective autonomy, but it does follow a long string of actions and attitudes on the left that are hostile to the idea of a law-abiding citizen using a lethal weapon to protect himself and his property.<\/p>\n<p>Elected last year, Bragg began his term by directing prosecutors under him to seek prison time only for \u201cthe most serious offenses \u2014 including murder, sexual assault and economic crimes involving vast sums of money \u2014 unless the law requires them to do otherwise,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/06\/nyregion\/alvin-bragg-manhattan-da.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according<\/a> to The New York Times. He also directed them not to seek jail sentences for \u201ccertain robberies and assaults,\u201d and to rarely \u201crequest prison sentences of more than 20 years.\u201d Unsurprisingly, NYC crime rates have continued to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/news\/local\/crime-and-courts\/nyc-shootings-and-murders-are-down-but-overall-crime-is-up-for-2022-nypd\/3766036\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rise<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind, this is in the same state that just went to the Supreme Court over its desire to prevent regular citizens from being able to protect themselves from those crimes with a concealed handgun. After the Supreme Court found New York\u2019s restrictive rules unconstitutional, the state <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/07\/05\/new-york-effectively-nullifies-the-supreme-courts-latest-pro-second-amendment-decision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rushed<\/a> to pass a new law that severely limits where legal handguns may be carried and requires permit applicants to provide their social media accounts for review.<\/p>\n<p>And never, ever forget the madness that descended on then-17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse after he shot three men in self-defense during a night of violent rioting in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Rittenhouse was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/11\/19\/not-guilty-on-all-counts-jury-completely-exonerates-kyle-rittenhouse-affirms-right-to-self-defense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">smeared<\/a> as a \u201cwhite supremacist\u201d by President Joe Biden and as a murderer by the corrupt press, and dragged through a weeks-long trial and more than a year of hateful <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/11\/23\/rittenhouse-verdict-reveals-once-again-that-the-left-wants-riots-and-hates-self-defense\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">slander<\/a> before being found not guilty on all counts by reason of self-defense.<\/p>\n<p>Power-hungry prosecutors and politicians who protect crimes and riotous behavior while targeting law-abiding citizens\u2019 freedom to defend themselves don\u2019t do so accidentally. They want Americans to be intimidated and dependent on them, and they don\u2019t shy away from abusing the criminal justice system to achieve those ends.
