As of May, the metric was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/inflation-reaches-8-6-setting-new-four-decade-high\">surging<\/a> at 8.6% year-over-year, setting a fresh four-decade high.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expect the headline number, which includes gas and food, to be highly elevated, mainly because gas prices were so elevated in June,\u201d White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/press-briefings\/2022\/07\/12\/press-briefing-by-press-secretary-karine-jean-pierre-and-national-security-advisor-jake-sullivan\/\">said<\/a>. \u201cGas and food prices continue to be heavily impacted by the war in Ukraine. And there are a few important points to keep in mind when we get this backwards-looking data.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, Jean-Pierre indicated that June price data would be somewhat outdated due to the possible easing of inflationary pressures. Gas prices, for example, have gradually abated over the past several weeks after surpassing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/gas-prices-hit-grim-national-average-of-5-per-gallon\">$5.00 per gallon<\/a> in early June. As of Tuesday, the national average gas price was $4.66, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/gasprices.aaa.com\/\">AAA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe President\u2019s number one economic priority is tackling inflation. And looking ahead, there are a number of reasons why we expect those high prices to ease over the coming months,\u201d Jean-Pierre continued. \u201cOur administration will continue driving structural change to produce lower prices, higher wages, and to make our economy dynamic and competitive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inflation is a salient issue for Americans casting their ballots in this year\u2019s midterm elections. Only 1% of voters currently would characterize economic conditions as excellent, according to a poll released on Monday by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/11\/us\/politics\/biden-approval-polling-2024.html\">The New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Biden administration\u2019s wariness with respect to inflation is shared by Americans. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York\u2019s most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkfed.org\/newsevents\/news\/research\/2022\/20220711\">Survey of Consumer Expectations<\/a> revealed that Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/americans-inflation-forecasts-hit-another-record-high\">foresee<\/a> one-year-ahead inflation hitting 6.8% \u2014 an increase from 6.6% in May and the highest level since the survey began in 2013. Yet medium-term expectations somewhat diminished, with inflation expectations for the next three years falling from 3.9% to 3.6%.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier remarks from the White House, however, have claimed that the United States economy remains robust.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I\u2019m trying to say to you is that the economy is in a better place than it has been historically,\u201d Jean-Pierre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-press-secretary-the-economy-is-in-a-better-place-than-it-has-been-historically\">said<\/a> in early June. \u201cAnd so, we feel, here at this administration and other experts as well\u2026 we feel that we are in a good position to take on inflation. We are in a good position to really start really working on lowering prices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we look at where we are economically \u2014 and we are stronger economically than we have been in history,\u201d Jean-Pierre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/white-house-again-claims-u-s-stronger-economically-than-we-have-been-in-history\">commented<\/a> last week. \u201cWhen you look at the unemployment numbers at 3.6%, when you look at the jobs numbers, more than 8.7 million of new jobs created, that is important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, job growth has been a bright spot in an otherwise dismal economic landscape. Yet the labor force participation rate \u2014 the percentage of people who either have a job or are actively looking for one \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/americans-continue-to-opt-out-of-the-workforce\">continues to lag<\/a> behind pre-recession levels.
