Jeter played in 15 games in 1995, then played in virtually every Yankees game in 1996, batting .314 and named AL Rookie of the Year as the Yankees won their first World Series in 18 years. Rodriguez played 17 games for the Seattle Mariners in 1994, then 48 in 1995 before playing in 146 games with a league-leading batting average of .358 along with 36 home runs and 123 RBI in 1996.<\/p>\n<p>Jeter, 48, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/tvshowbiz\/article-11004213\/Derek-Jeter-opens-lost-trust-Alex-Rodriguez.html\">stated<\/a> on the ESPN series \u201cThe Captain\u201d that an April 2001 article about Rodriquez in Esquire catalyzed his anger toward Rodriguez. Rodriguez said in the article:<\/p>\n<p><em>Jeter\u2019s been blessed with great talent around him. He\u2019s never had to lead. He can just go and play and have fun. He hits second \u2014 that\u2019s totally different than third or fourth in a lineup. You go into New York, you wanna stop Bernie and O\u2019Neill. You never say, \u201cDon\u2019t let Derek beat you.\u201d He\u2019s never your concern.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Two months before that, as Jeter negotiated his contract with the Yankees, Rodriguez sniped that Jeter\u2019s contract would not compare with Rodriguez\u2019s $252 million contract with the Texas Rangers. He told Dan Patrick, \u201c \u2026 he just doesn\u2019t do the power numbers and defensively he doesn\u2019t do all those things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked at the time if those comments had bothered him, Jeter answered, \u201cNot at all. I\u2019ve known him for a long time. Obviously, it didn\u2019t come out good, what he supposedly said, but he said his intentions weren\u2019t bad, so that\u2019s the way I look at it. We\u2019re close. We obviously don\u2019t spend a lot of time together because we\u2019re in different cities, but he\u2019s a good friend of mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Jeter, who was named the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/08\/27\/derek-jeters-best-yankees-moments-a-new-captain\/\">captain of the Yankees<\/a> in 2003, the year before Rodriguez joined the team, told ESPN, \u201cThe Dan Patrick interview, he was talking about a comparison between me and him on the field. In my mind, he got his contract, so you\u2019re trying to diminish what I\u2019m doing maybe to justify why you got paid?\u201d He admitted his statistics, \u201cnever compared to Alex\u2019s statistics. \u2026 I\u2019m not blind. I understand. But we won.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Esquire comments rankled Jeter. He admitted, \u201cThose comments bothered me because, like I said, I\u2019m very, very loyal. As a friend, I\u2019m loyal. I just looked at it as \u2018I wouldn\u2019t have done it.\u2019 And then it was the media. The constant hammer to the nail. They just kept hammering it in. It just became noise, which frustrated me. Just constant noise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rodriguez, who shifted from his natural position at shortstop to third base when he joined the Yankees, doubled down on his 2001 comments when asked about them by ESPN. \u201cWhen that came out, I felt really bad about it,\u201d he confessed. \u201cI saw the way it was playing out. The way it was written, I absolutely said exactly what I said. It was a comment that I stand behind today. It was a complete tsunami. It was one of the greatest teams ever. To say that you don\u2019t have to focus on just one player is totally fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the way, the same could be said about my team with the Mariners,\u201d Rodriguez added. \u201cWe had Ken Griffey Jr., Edgar Martinez, Jay Buhner. If someone said that about me, I\u2019d be like, \u2018No s***. Absolutely. You better not just worry about me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can say whatever you want about me as a player, that\u2019s fine, but then it goes back to the trust and the loyalty,\u201d Jeter declared. \u201cThis is how the guy feels, he\u2019s not a true friend, is how I felt. Because I wouldn\u2019t do it to a friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rodriguez admitted that his comments \u201cbroke the trust\u201d between the two men. \u201cAnd I think from that moment on it was never quite the same ever again. I think it\u2019s [me] really not understanding the way things work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two men played together on the Yankees from 2004 through 2013, winning a World Series together in 2009. In that Series, Jeter batted .407 while Rodriguez batted .250.<\/p>\n<p>Jeter retired after the 2014 season, which Rodriquez missed because he had been <a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/2738639-alex-rodriguez-says-ped-suspension-cost-him-his-reputation-more-than-40m\">suspended from baseball<\/a> for his involvement in Major League Baseball\u2019s\u00a0Biogenesis scandal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still gonna be cordial.
