The reason, according to the party, is that \u201cpresident\u201d never really rolled off the Russian tongue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our country, by historical standards, [president] is generally a new word, and until it takes root completely, you can safely replace it,\u201d the party said in a statement. \u201cFor example, with the phrase \u2018head of state\u2019 or the word \u2018ruler.\u2019 Both are more understandable to the Russian ear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">MISSION CREEP: RU&#8217;s nationalist Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR) has proposed replacing Putin\u2019s title of \u201cPresident\u201d with the more august appellation of \u201cRuler\u201d. Previously, the head of the the LDPR floated a proposal to call Putin the &#8220;Supreme Ruler&#8221;. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WqG0GTftxB\">https:\/\/t.co\/WqG0GTftxB<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Chuck Pfarrer (@ChuckPfarrer) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChuckPfarrer\/status\/1546822568522432512?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 12, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident\u201d has \u201calways embarrassed us,\u201d the party said.<\/p>\n<p>Putin also served two stints as prime minister in his two-decade-plus tenure as a way of getting around term limits.<\/p>\n<p>Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the party\u2019s long-time leader and a Putin sycophant, proposed on several occasions referring to the president as the \u201cSupreme Ruler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two years ago, the Russian parliament nixed an LDPR proposal to call the president \u201csupreme ruler.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Kremlin said at the time that Putin\u00a0had no view on the proposal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-t=\"{\" n>The Kremlin, which could make the change, responded in neutral terms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-t=\"{\" n>\u201cIt is a new idea. There is no position on this matter,\u201d said Putin\u2019s top spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, <a href=\"https:\/\/tass.com\/politics\/1478045\">according to<\/a> Russian state-owned news outlet TASS.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-t=\"{\" n>Earlier this year, Putin likened himself to Tsar Peter the Great in justifying the February invasion of Ukraine.\u00a0He said he was acting in the tradition of Russia\u2019s first emperor to recoup ancestral Russian lands.<\/p>\n<p data-t=\"{\" n>\u201cPeter the Great waged the Great Northern War for 21 years,\u201d Putin said, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/hailing-peter-great-putin-draws-parallel-with-mission-return-russian-lands-2022-06-09\/\" data-analytics-module=\"body_link\" data-analytics-post-depth=\"60\" data-uri=\"f890b81d771991376ff986146db1df31\">Reuters<\/a>. \u201cIt would seem that he was at war with Sweden, he took something from them. He did not take anything from them.<\/p>\n<p>Putin was prime minister of Russia from 1999-2000, and served in the role again from 2008-2012, with presidential terms in between. Despite this seeming change in leadership, no one was confused about who was in charge.<\/p>\n<p>He was most recently re-elected in 2018, garnering 77% of the vote in an election with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-43455950\">many<\/a> voting irregularities.
