Jordan\u2019s observation that \u201cEllen Page just had her breasts removed\u201d had apparently violated Twitter\u2019s rules against \u201cmisgendering\u201d and \u201cdeadnaming,\u201d two neologisms that mean the opposite of what they seem. The verb \u201cto misgender\u201d first appeared in 1989. It ostensibly refers to inaccurately identifying someone\u2019s sex, but ironically it has come to mean accurately identifying the sex of people who wish it were not so. In reality, Jordan did not \u201cmisgender\u201d Ellen Page; he simply \u201cgendered\u201d her. The only people \u201cmisgendering\u201d the actress are the ones who pretend that she is a man.<\/p>\n<p>The term \u201cdeadname,\u201d which first appeared sometime in the early 2010s, follows a similar illogic. It describes a person\u2019s name from birth until the moment in which he declared himself to be a member of the opposite sex or no sex at all and assumed a new name. Today Ellen goes by \u201cElliot\u201d and has even legally changed her name. But \u201cEllen\u201d isn\u2019t Miss Page\u2019s \u201cdeadname.\u201d Even if one were to accept the dubious premise that men have a right to call themselves \u201cSally\u201d and ladies a right to call themselves \u201cHank,\u201d Ellen isn\u2019t dead. She is very much alive and has called herself \u201cEllen\u201d for 33 of her 35 years. \u201cEllen Page\u201d starred in Jason Reitman\u2019s hit film Juno, for which \u201cEllen Page\u201d received an Oscar<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oscars.org\/oscars\/ceremonies\/2008\"> nomination<\/a> for Best Actress. Must Reitman recut his movie credits now that Ellen fancies herself \u201cElliot\u201d? Must the Academy rescind Ellen\u2019s nomination for Best Actress and retroactively nominate her for Best Actor? The Academy continues to list \u201cEllen Page\u201d among its past nominees. Does Hollywood\u2019s most prestigious body condone \u201cdeadnaming\u201d?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-407339\" class=\"wp-image-407339 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screen-Shot-2022-07-11-at-9.53.17-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"722\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screen-Shot-2022-07-11-at-9.53.17-AM.png 722w, https:\/\/dw-wp-production.imgix.net\/2022\/07\/Screen-Shot-2022-07-11-at-9.53.17-AM-300x186.png 300w\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-407339\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The current list of the 2008 \u2018Best Actress\u2019 nominees on Oscars.org<\/p>\n<p>The prevailing transgender consensus contends that Ellen has always in some way been Elliot. According to Wikipedia, for instance, \u201cPage was born on February 21, 1987\u2026 He was assigned female at birth and used his birth name of Ellen prior to transitioning.\u201d In other words, \u201che\u201d was always a man, albeit a man whom everyone, apparently including herself, believed to be a woman. But Ellen\u2019s supposedly eternal maleness raises new problems of sexual identity. Prior to her \u201ctransition,\u201d Ellen entered into a \u201csame-sex marriage\u201d with a woman named Emma Portner. At the time, both ladies considered themselves to be lesbians. Miss Portner still does. But to affirm Page\u2019s \u201cgender identity\u201d is to deny Portner\u2019s \u201csexual orientation,\u201d and vice versa. If during their relationship Ellen was a man, then Emma was not a lesbian; if Emma was a lesbian, then Ellen was not a man. One cannot simultaneously indulge the sexual ideologies of both women.<\/p>\n<p>And what if someday Ellen once again acknowledges that she is in fact a woman? A growing number of people have<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepublicdiscourse.com\/2015\/04\/14688\/\"> regretted<\/a> their \u201ctransitions\u201d and<a href=\"https:\/\/lacroicsz.substack.com\/p\/by-any-other-name?utm_source=url&#038;s=r\"> returned<\/a> to their proper names and pronouns. Will her Wikipedia page strike virtually all references to \u201cElliot\u201d and \u201chis\u201d accomplishments, just as it did for \u201cEllen\u201d? What if Ellen changes her mind again? Does her sexual identity have any basis in objective reality, or does it hinge entirely on her own will? The answers to these questions carry implications beyond abstract theorizing. If a person\u2019s sex has its basis in biological reality, then we can perceive that reality with our intellect and avoid falling afoul of the censors\u2019 rules against \u201cmisgendering\u201d in the public square. If a person\u2019s will determines his sex, then one can never know for certain what to call anyone, and the censors might cast any of us at any moment into the social media gulag with Jordan Peterson.<\/p>\n<p>The social media companies themselves are liable to fall afoul of this capricious view of sex, as ironically Twitter did when it de-platformed Jordan. After the censors suspended Jordan for mentioning \u201cEllen Page,\u201d the forbidden name began to trend, which BuzzFeed<a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/juliareinstein\/twitter-elliot-page-deadname-trending\"> noted<\/a> meant that Twitter had immediately violated the very same rule for which it had punished Peterson. Twitter soon apologized and replaced \u201cEllen\u201d with \u201cElliot\u201d among the trending terms.<\/p>\n<p>This revision did not represent a bug in the system but rather an essential feature of the transgender ideology. As one transgender scholar<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/08989575.2019.1542845\"> explains<\/a>, \u201cThe matter of \u2018the past\u2019 is a complicated one for transsexual and transgender people.\u201d That is because the transgender identity requires the constant rewriting of the past according to one\u2019s present self-definition. \u201cIt is only understandable,\u201d the scholar insists, \u201cif a trans person responds by insisting on the primacy of the present, by seeking to erase the past, or even by emotionally locating their \u2018real self\u2019 in the future, that elusive place where access (to transition, health care, housing, a livable wage, and so on) and social viability tend to appear more abundant.\u201d If Ellen calls<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, Twitter suspended Jordan Peterson for calling a woman by her name.
