Koretz&#8217;s Director of Environmental Affairs Andy Shrader said, &#8220;It\u2019s really up to cities to turn around climate change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Shrader intends to hold a hearing about the issue later this summer and held a conference to promote the ban of gas stations, &#8220;L.A.\u2019s enormous and damaging ecological footprint really helped set us on this path,&#8221; Shrader said, &#8220;If you have lung cancer, you stop smoking; if your planet\u2019s on fire, you stop pouring gasoline on it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>California Governor Gavin Newsom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ca.gov\/2020\/09\/23\/governor-newsom-announces-california-will-phase-out-gasoline-powered-cars-drastically-reduce-demand-for-fossil-fuel-in-californias-fight-against-climate-change\/\">instituted a policy<\/a> in 2020 that aimed to phase out gasoline-powered cars entirely and drastically erase the demand for fossil fuels by 2035.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Councilman Koretz said the ban on new gas stations is a vital step towards Newsom&#8217;s goal. &#8220;Gas stations are a dying business,&#8221; he said, &#8220;Their toxic chemicals take years and millions of dollars to clean up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Koretz and Shrader&#8217;s proposal not only bans the creation of new gas stations but mandates &#8220;any expansions of current gas stations to be limited to serving zero-emissions vehicles and providing non-fuel-related facilities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>A 28-year-old L.A. woman agreed and said, &#8220;I think we have enough, to be honest \u2014 more than enough&#8221; gas stations. She also complained about L.A.&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/thepostmillennial.com\/california-gas-price-breaks-record-at-5-per-gallon\">high gas prices<\/a> and that she still had to pay off her SUV.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>49-year-old Troy Parker told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2022-07-11\/california-cities-ban-new-gas-stations-amid-climate-change\"><em>The Los Angeles Times<\/em><\/a> he wants to switch to electric cars but they&#8217;re too expensive. He also said, &#8220;If people were more educated, they would be more aware and would oppose the new gas stations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Parker said he received that education through a &#8220;sustainability course.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<section data-v-f313b7e6=\"\">\n<p>Koretz\u2019s plan to ban new gas stations was seconded by Councilman Kevin de Le\u00f3n when it was introduced in May 2021.
