We will continue to work with our international partners to address the challenges of regional migration while ensuring our borders remain secure,\u201d Mayorkas said.<\/p>\n<p>TPS, established by Congress in 1990, enables the secretary of homeland security to give protection to immigrants from certain countries if the secretary finds the immigrants\u2019 home countries meet certain legal criteria, such as being embroiled in an armed conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Nationals of a country living in the United States are shielded from deportation through TPS, even if they are in the United States illegally.<\/p>\n<p>TPS also enables the grantees to legally work.<\/p>\n<p>Mayorkas, in one of his first moves as secretary, in March 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/us-lets-venezuelans-stay-temporarily-will-review-sanctions_3726328.html\">granted TPS<\/a> to Venezuelans because he said their home country is \u201cin turmoil\u201d and \u201cunable to protect its own citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like many of the Biden administration\u2019s immigration-related policies, the action differed from the course taken during the Trump administration, which had granted a lower-level protection to a smaller number of Venezuelan nationals.<\/p>\n<p>Mayorkas\u2019s grant only applied to Venezuelans who arrived in the United States as of March 8, 2021.\u00a0Activists and lawmakers have pressed Mayorkas to give TPS to Venezuelans who arrived after that date, but the extension does not include such an adjustment.<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers from both parties had lobbied for an extension, including Sens.
